Malawi will not play Ghana in Zambia, says FAM president
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has ruled out the possibility of playing their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations last round return leg against Ghana in Zambia.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said in an interview from Lilongwe yesterday that if repairs at Kamuzu Stadium are not completed in time, the decisive match will be staged at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.
Three weeks ago, the Malawian government closed Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre due to safety and security fears and had indicated that the match could be switched to Zambia due to lack of suitable venues.
Last month Malawi’s Sports minister Enock Chihana said when announcing the closing of Kamuzu Stadium that: “I am optimistic the facility will be repaired in time for the match. Prevention is better than cure so as government we cannot risk people’s lives but rather have the game shifted to a neutral venue like Zambia.”
But Nyamilandu said Lilongwe’s Civo Stadium can host international games like the October 13 clash against Ghana.
He said repairs at Kamuzu Stadium are on-going and a decision will be made next Monday on which venue to host the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
“If Kamuzu Stadium will not be ready, Civo Stadium in Lilongwe will host the match. Civo Stadium is of international standards,” Nyamilandu said.
Malawi lost 0-2 to Ghana last Saturday and need to score three unanswered goals to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
