Chilumpha advises Malawians to focus on development not politics

Minister of Energy and Mining Dr. Cassim Chilumpha who is also Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota South has advised Malawians to concentrate on development rather than on politics in order for the country to achieve meaningful and substantial development.

The minister gave the advice Saturday at Nkhotakota LEA School within Nkhotakota South Constituency where he presented cheque worth K4, 488, 775.20 to school management committee for the construction of resource room for pupils with learning difficulties under local development fund (LDF).

“If we focus much on politics, we will just waste our time because politics is dynamic and unpredictable. Let me therefore call upon chiefs, village heads, politicians and government officials to concentrate in serving interests of the public, not selfish interests, to develop the country.

Chilumpha: Development

“By focusing on development, all of us will work together and the funds for various developmental projects cannot be abused and implementation of those projects will adhere to project design,” he said.

The minister said it was his hope that the funds would be used for its intended purpose to assist people with learning difficulties in line with 2012 Disability Act.

“During the 2012/13 parliamentary budget meeting, the house enacted Disability Act which seeks to deal with discrimination by providing equal opportunity to people with disabilities like any other person. However, this piece of legislation can only be effective if people with disabilities are granted an opportunity to learn and the resource room which will be constructed at Nkhotakota LEA will assist a lot in realizing that,” the minister said.

Nkhotakota LEA School Head teacher, Bright Kambewa and Chief Malengachanzi said the school has been lagging behind in the past in terms of development because of the attitude of the previous school management committee who prioritised personal gains at the expense of public interests.

“After observing that things were not moving because of this committee, I ordered abolition of the committee and a new one was formed and I am glad to see that now there is progress,” Chief Malengachanzi said.

The minister then requested the village heads, school management committees and parents to be passionate about welfare of their children, citing that abuse of funds results in suffering of their own children and they are supposed to be concerned upon seeing their children learning under shade on a rainy or sunny day.

“I would therefore, like to urge all Malawians that whenever they observe a problem, they should take necessary action to deal with it or at least alleviate it like what the chief did. I call upon the current school management committee which has been entrusted with implementation of the project to perform its duties faithfully and honestly to come up with a functional building because the resource centre at Nkhotakota LEA is the only one in the district and it serves learners with learning difficulties across the district,” he said.

Apart from Nkhotakota, the minister also attended cheque presentations to school management committees of Chididi and Nkhotakota CCAP School who have also benefited developmental projects under LDF.
