Malika Chitanda is Miss Blantyre 2011
A 23-year-old Malika Tamara Chitanda, holder of Diploma in Information Technology from Shareworld Open University is the newly crowned Miss Blantyre beauty queen for 2011.
Malika, a resident of Naperi in the city, came top of eight other contestants to win the crown during the beauty pageant that took place at Shire Highlands Hotel on Saturday.
The first princess went to Tadala Ndisale, 18, an accounting student at Malawi College of Accountancy and the second princess went to Tamara Justin Mbewe, 18, studying Business Management at Malawi Polytechnic.
Malika told Nyasa Timesshe was confident she would win the title and it did not come as a surprise after she was announced the winner.
“Yes I had stiff competition from my colleagues but with the experience I have in modeling, I knew the crown was mine,” said Malika, adding “I have done quite a lot in modeling.”
Malika, who wants to become a successful model, started modeling in her teens and has previously, won the Miss Malawi 2008 and 2010 ‘Miss Smile’ and ‘Miss Personality’, respectively. She was also voted second princess in the Malawi News Model of the Year 2007, two years after she won Miss Limbe.
As Miss Blantyre, she promises to do a lot for the commercial city and the residents, especially “helping to keep Blantyre clean” and “working with the girl child”.
“There’s a lot that needs to be done for the cleanliness of Blantyre and its beauty. I want to engage different stakeholders to bring back the glory that Blantyre had, I hear it was one of the cleanest cities in this part of Africa.
“Besides that, I want to see many girls in school because as a woman, my desire is to see many women in decision-making positions in this country,” said Malika, the only child in her family.
As winner of Miss Blantyre 2011, the model went home with a mini laptop and K20,000 cash. The first and second princess went home with K10,000 and K5,000 cash, respectively. The three girls also got driving scholarship from Midima Driving and Chimz Driving schools, among other prizes.
Miss Blantyre is organized by Red Rose Modeling Agency and in a separate interview, Dorothy Kamoto, the agency’s manager, told Nyasa Times: “we’re happy with the whole process and the three girls are capable enough to do what we have planned.”
She said the first project would be donating some stuff to an unidentified orphanage or hospital.
“At the moment we have some basic needs like soap, sugar and other related things but we’re still sourcing for more. We should be making a donation once we finalize collecting the stuff,” disclosed Kamoto.
Red Rose Modeling Agency has set some objectives for Miss Blantyre, which among them include, identifying means of sending street children and abandoned babies to school and early childhood and learning centers.
The Blantyre queen would also be responsible for promotion of responsible behavior among young people during campaigns like World AIDS Day, Global Call for Action Against Poverty (the Stand Up Against Poverty Campaign), and Child-Healthy Week.
The winner would be an image to promote safer sex methods for young people like abstinence, condom usage and being faithful as a way of contributing towards HIV/AIDS response, as said by the Miss Blantyre organizers.
