Malawi soldiers rough up MCP officials over flag flying
A group of the Malawi Defence Force soldiers and police officers on Monday in Mzuzu roughed up a man and passengers in a vehicle flying the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) flag despite the official political campaign period closed last Sunday morning.
A black vehicle in tinted glasses registration number NA 4581 with MCP flag was carrying the MCP faithfuls and other officials including a right thinking member of the society Tiane Nyirenda a graduate from the Malawi Polytechnic Schools.
The other notable face was that of the Mzuzu city shadow councilor for Chibanja ward Robert Kadali Mkandawire.
The black and red flag printed with boarded words ‘Malawi” pegged on the vehicle’s bonnet with other party materials clipped on the driver’s mirror glass were torn apart by the security officers besides chasing them away .
The incident happened at the Malawi Electoral Commission warehouse at Luwinga in Mzuzu where candidates from all political parties including independent ones came to witness the dispatching of voting materials to various voting centers in Mzuzu.
“We came to resubmit names of our monitors and have some documents signed by the Chief Executive officer Mr. Chirwa,” said Nyirenda in a low torn voice when the soldiers demanded to know the reason of flying the flag when the campaign period was over and coming to the warehouse when the party was already represented by the candidate .
Mzuzu city chief executive Officer Thomas Chirwa said he was not aware of the flag being flown by the MCP members saying by the time this happened he was away.
“So far there is no complaint about anyone flying a flag or any challenge we have met regarding the dispatching of the voting material,” said Chirwa.
