Charles Kamoto, Airtel Malawi Acting Managing Director said at Chiwembe Technical and Development Centre that the sponsorship was in line with Airtel Rising Stars sponsorship for secondary school.

Kamoto said they heeded the call to help FAM because it deserves to be supported.

”We have been talking with FAM for along time and we feel football is worth investing. We have assisted the Flames before last year and we sponsor the Airtel Rising Stars which shares the same vision with current Flames step of rebuilding for the future,” Kamoto said.

He hinted on considering a long term relationship with the association.

“We will support the rebuilding,” he said.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu commended Airtel Malawi for a favourable response to their request for help.

He said the money would help in planning for the national team’s friendly in November or participation at the Cecafa.

“The money from Airtel will go a long way to help Flames prepare for the Guinea Afcon matches next year. This will help Malawi plan for a friendly in November or play at the Cecafa. We appreciate the audience you have given us in regard to the sponsoring the Flame,” he said.

Nyamilandu also hoped that the country’s leading mobile phone service provider would consider becoming a permanent sponsor.

“ We have no doubt that very soon you will become a permanent sponsor. Massive opportunities will be availed to Airtel to help grow the brand,” he said.

The development is likely going to send tongues wagging at Airtel’s rivals TNM which is sponsoring Malawi’s flagship top league Super League.

When Airtel donated K10 million towards the national team’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations TNM did not take it lightly. It came at the eleventh honour tp donate K5 million which was used for Malawi national football team to fulfill its assignment after the government had indicated that it had no money to spend for the team as it exhausted its grant.

That’s Malawi instead of fighting with poverty you are busy to still money ???? and put in your pocket. I agree with another commentator he said better to support more than to waste for nothing.

Investing in football in a poor country like this is useless, football is suppose to generate income and be sustainable, not the other way round. We can use this money better ( like feed several thousand children and prevent them from becoming malnourished) than to sponsor a bunch of ignoramuses kick a sphere.
