This news comes barely a few days after the NFRA sounded an SOS against a backdrop of lack of finances to suffice its operations.

Breaking the news in Mzuzu on Friday, Airtel Malawi Zonal Business Manager Gerald Kanthungo said the donation was meant to uplift the NFRA in its errands of developing football from the grassroots.

“Airtel understands the significance to support grassroots football, and how an institution like NRFA impacts in changing the lives of young people. We believe this contribution will help support NRFA’s objectives and goals,” said Kanthungo.

“Airtel Malawi is honoured to flex in the sport of football by contributing to the development of grassroots football today,” Kanthungo explained.

In her remarks, Football Association  of Malawi Executive Member Slyveria Chalira applauded Airtel for the gesture and promised that the funds will be utilised properly so as to win more confidence from Airtel as a potential sponsor.

“We are excited and happy that Airtel has come to our rescue. We were desperate but now we can smile because the challenges we faced in our operations will be dealt with accordingly. Surely this donation will go a long way in uplifting us,” she explained.

Airtel Malawi’s involvement in football dates years ago through its donation to the Malawi National Football team as well as its investment in the annual Airtel Rising Stars national tournament which seeks to unearth raw talent in under 17 boys and girls.
