Airtel Malawi Open Golf tourney registers record field

The three day Airtel Open Golf Championship held over the weekend at Malawi’s premier golf course of Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) recorded the highest field of golfers ever in a single tournament in the club’s history.

A total of 146 golfers from LGC and its sister clubs participated in the tournament, which was categorised in Championship Division, A-Division, B-Division and Ladies’ Division. Ladies played stable-fold while the other three divisions played stroke-play format.

Lilongwe based Zone VI golfer Victor Kachepatsonga emerged top in the elite Championship Division with a gross of 227 strokes. He was presented with a titliest staff bag, an Iphone, Airtel premier bag and glass trophy by sponsors Airtel Malawi.

Flamboyant golfer Brian Coombes came second after counting out former Airtel champion Adam Sailesi on gross 228.

Mzuzu based youthful golfer Godfrey Chisale survived a double play-off against experienced Adak Sailesi to win the A-Division after the two golfers had tied on gross 167. Sailesi settled for second place with Chilungamo Chimwaza finishing third.

The B-Division was won by Collins Sibande on gross 177. He was trailed by Stafford Mpoola, who counted out Mukesh Vashi on 187 gross.

Evergree Maria Le Cho won the ladies’ division with 37 stable-fold points, two ahead of second placed Evelyn Bailey.

All the winners received assorted prizes from Airtel ranging from airtime, mobile phone gadgets, golf equipment and trophies.

“Airtel Malawi acting managing director Charles Kamoto expressed happiness with the turn-up of 146 golfers: “I thank Lilongwe Golf Club for hosting us over the three days and all golfers that have participated in the tournament. Congratulations to all winners and for those that have not won try again later because we are coming again next year,” said Kamoto.
