Airtel robbers given lengthy prison sentence
Three people who robbed an Airtel sales agent K180, 000 and airtime worth thousands of Kwacha in Rumphi district are beginning lengthy prison sentences.
The three are; Spark Cockroach Banda 24 from Kanyenda village T/A Njombwa in Kasungu district, Bright Chipwere 21 of Goliati village, T/A Chimaliro in Thyolo and Oscar Mhango 23 from Mwadandambe village, T/A Chikulamayembe in Rumphi district.
Rumphi police station spokesperson Victor Khamisi said the court learnt that on 29 April at around 7pm the three men attacked an Airtel salesman Sekeleza Kalirani and went away with K180, 000 and airtime.
Khamisi said during the material day, Kalirani and one of the convicts Oscar Mhango went to Livingstonia trading centre on a motorcycle to sell airtime.
Mhango was the one driving the motorcycle since the salesman did not know how to ride a motorcycle.
Upon reaching Chipokawawoli bridge, Mhango claimed that the motorcycle had developed a fault and they had to stop.
”But this was a deliberate plan since Mhango had connived with the two other convicts to lay in ambush at the bridge and rob the salesman,” said Khamisi.
Passing sentence, first grade magistrate Bentry Kumwenda said the three convicts deserved stiffer punishments as cases of robbery were on the increase in Rumphi.
The magistrate also noted that the three convicted men had properly planned the offence which showed that they were determined to commit the crime.
The magistrate said such people need to be given lengthy jail terms so that they can be rehabilitated into productive citizens.
He then sentenced them to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.
