Airtel workers threaten to strike

Airtel Malawi doesn’t only charge highest tariffs in the world but they also pay peanuts to their workers.

Customer care department workers at the company has summoned their management to address their grievances

“We want management of Airtel to look into the plight of us workers such as salaries and working conditions,” said one of the workers.

The meeting saw the workers threatening the management up to Monday to respond or they will down tools.

“These are the newly recruits who mostly are University of Malawi graduates.  The maximum pay at the department is at K50 000 with some getting as little as K20 000.

“The other problem is that when one falls sick, they deduct the payment for the days you have been absent even if you show the medical proof,” said the source.

“So what we are demanding is an increase of payment to a minimum of K80 000 taking into consideration that life nowadays is very expensive,” the source added.

The workers threatened that if the complaints are not addressed by next Monday, they will go on strike.

The management representative reportedly gave no valid response saying they have to consult their superiors first.
