Alpha Milling in nationwide Chicken production sensitization

Alpha Milling Company, the company that produces proto feeds and proto chicks has embarked on a nationwide sensitization campaign aimed at equipping local farmers with relevant knowledge and skills on poultry farming.

The company’s Sales and Technical officer, Enock Kamanga,  confirmed the development in an interview.

Kamanga said his company noted that many farmers lack relevant knowledge on chicken production, as such they fail to realize maximum gains from the industry.

He said the sensitization campaings therefore aim to bring information, skills and new technologies on chicken farming closer to the local farmers so that they are able to improve on production.

Kamanga: Sensitisation

”The company noted that many local farmers lack technical skills in poultry farming as  knowledge and skills are not readily available as is the case with maize or  livestock farming,” he said.

Kamanga said poultry farming has the economic potential to alleviate household poverty among the poor rural farmers.

He said the industry, if well managed, has readily available market which is currently under-utilized.

”Everyday people want to eat a chicken, in hotels, cocktails people long for a meal with a chicken, but the local market is failing to satisfy such a market demand,” said Kamanga.

He said this is due to many people’s involvement into poultry farming as a tradition, rearing chicken for consumption only.

Kamanga said besides conducting sensitization campaigns his company is also running a Alpha milling demo farm in Chiradzulu where every week 20 farmers from across the country are pulled together to learn new technologies in poultry farming.

So far over 400 farmers have benefitted through this initiative.

The sensitization campaigns have already been conducted in southern and central regions.

In the north, they will be done in Mzimba, Karonga, Nkhata-bay among others.
