Anguish, pain as junior workers shut down Karonga hospital to demand removal of bosses

Irate junior workers at Karonga district hospital have on Tuesday morning  staged a strike to paralyse operations ignoring the facility as they blocked some of their seniors to enter the gate.

The concerned workers are accusing their seniors for being corrupt and mismanaging the hospital resources.

According to them, the senior officers are fond of sharing themselves hospital funds a development which is crippling the hospital services.

Apart from that, senior workers are accused of shielding their colleagues who stole an engine of a government ambulance, Toyota Cruiser registration number 31 MG 1548 last week.

“All services have been crippled here. We are buying materials using our own cash and the management is failing to refund us despite receiving funds monthly. We have tried to lodge out complaints but to no avail,” said one of the workers.

Adding “we shall not go back to our work until all the bosses are removed.”

Among the senior workers include Malawi Nyirenda (DNO), Alex Chilombo (Administrator), Mavuto Nawonga (Human Resource), Stuart Chirambo (Procurement officer) and Mc Dolnad Kamwela (Maintainance officer).

The strike has brought untold hardship to many patients especially those who needed urgent medical attention were turned back by the hospital.

Youth activist Steven Simsokwe who rushed to the scene asked the workers to express their concern in sober manner in order to protect the lives of patients.

“We, the youths are on your side. We shall do out best to support you to deal with these irresponsible officers but as we are doing that, let us save and protect the lives of patients,” he said.

He accused some senior workers for operating the hospital as their private hospital especially by privatising some services like mortuary.

Meanwhile, the patients are faced with series of pain and agony as a result of the strike action.
