One killed, four seriously injured in Nsanje minibus accident

One person has been confirmed dead while four others have sustained injuries after a minibus they were traveling in on their way to Nsanje from Blantyre overturned on Khulubvi Highway Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Memory Msonthi, Procurement Officer for Care Malawi whose baby sustained minor cuts according to preliminary medical investigations.

Medics at Nsanje District Hospital confirmed the death of Memory Msonthi.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Maurice Makwinja in an interview on the accident scene said he had no details on what caused the accident.

“Currently, we are yet to discover what happened for the vehicle to hit the pole and overturn. We are still investigating,” said the Nsanje Police Chief.

However, an eye witness Wongani Gwedera said the driver of the minibus registration number LL4176 failed to negotiate a corner and hit the ESCOM pole forcing the minibus to overturn.

“From what I have seen, the driver failed to negotiate the corner and hit the pole forcing the minibus to overturn,” said Gwedera.

The driver of the minibus has been identified as Chikaiko Chibisa, aged 27 of Mayere Village, Traditional Authority Mbenje, the baby of the deceased, conductor Aaron Mukhaniwa who is 31 years old of Nancholi in Blantyre and Health Chinthebe who is 37 years old of Malemia Nsanje sustained injuries.

The medics said they are still monitoring the situation of the persons injured during the accident.
