Another Ekwendeni baby dumped in pit latrine: Malawi Police arrest mum
Malawi Police arrested a 22-year-old woman for allegedly dumping a newly born baby in a pit latrine at Ekwendeni in Mzimba District barely weeks after another was found dumped in a grave yard.
Confirming the arrest, Mzuzu Police publicist Martin Bwanali identified the woman as Fiskani Lungu of Mbiriyawaka Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mtwalo in the district.
He said the woman is married but was staying with her mother since her husband went to South Africa some time back to seek greener pasture.
“In April this year, the suspect’s mother discovered that her daughter was pregnant and when quizzed about the man responsible, the suspect kept a tight lid.
“Elders of the area noticed on 8 September that the suspect was no longer pregnant a thing which prompted them to question her and it was established that she had given birth and dumped the baby into a pit latrine to save herself from possible divorce,” Bwanali said.
He said when the matter was reported to police the pit latrine was demolished and the baby was found already dead.
Lungu is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charge of concealing birth of a child contrary to section 232 of the Penal Code.
The development comes barely weeks after another newly born baby was found dumped in a grave yard near Ekwendeni CCAP Mission.
Young boys who were playing close to the grave yard found the baby crying from severe red ants bites.
It was taken to the mission hospital for treatment where staff named the baby, Grace. She died four days later and was buried in the same grave yard she was dumped.
Police are yet to arrest the mother of late Grace.
