Atupele congratulates Mutharika, DPP for election victory

United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi became the first presidential contender to extend congratulations to Malawi President-elect Prof Peter Mutharika following the Malawi Electoral Commission ( MEC) announcement of elections results Friday night which declared him duly elected.

“I called him and wished him well. It is time to move forward,” said the 35- year politician.

“We in the UDF congratulate Prof Peter Muthatrika on his election as president of Malawi. We also congratulate the people of Malawi on the peaceful conduct of the election despite the tension,” he said.

He said the electoral process and the peaceful adjudication of disputes in the Malawians legal system are testaments to the progress the country has made in strengthening its democratic institutions, and the desire of the Malawians people to move their country forward.

Peter Mutharika, the brother of Malawi’s former leader, was declared the winner of the country’s disputed presidential election on Friday after garnering 36.4% of the votes cast.

A law professor and former cabinet minister, Mutharika, 74, is the brother of the late president Bingu wa Mutharika.

There was no immediate comment from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera who obtained 27.8% of the vote and earlier insisted had won the elections.
