Atupele justifies donation of medical products to China

United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has defended his decision to make a donation of medical products to the People’s Republic of China, which has been hit by the fatal coronavirus,  saying the super power was Malawi’s major development partner.

Atupele Muluzi:  We should all stand by China in combating coronavirus which is an international emergency.

Muluzi came under intense attack after he donated gloves and surgical masks to China to help it fight the ravaging coronavirus.

“China has been a reliable development partner for a long time and I thought of helping in a small way at the time they are facing this disease,” he said.

He said it is important  to be supportive of China in combating the epidemic, which represents a challenge for all.

However, social commentator Unandi Banda said Muluzi would have made the donation to the government of Malawi whose public hospitals are facing acute shortages of critical medical drugs and products.

Banda also said that the donation would have helped the government of Malawi prepare well for the coronavirus disease which has since reached South Africa.

Other Malawians in social media platforms wondered whether it was a good idea to make a donation to a super power, the second largest economy in the world.

But others said Atupele demonstrated a good spirit of “a friend in need is a friend indeed.”

The  corona virus is said to have been transmitted to humans from animals, particularly bats.

It has raised alarm worldwide, with cases reported across Asia, Europe, the U.S., and Canada.

Besides China, the virus has spread to more than 20 countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Itale, Singapore, France, Russia, Spain, and India.

Amalawi kusazolowera ndikupereka, think of it in china kuliso anthu osawuka, even ku america komabe amatithandiza……when you want to give you should not consider kuti winayo ndiwopeza bwino kapena wosawuka, and do not expect something in return…

Malawi is one of the country that does not give out, but expects to receive more…? simple instruction, give and you will be blessed.

Examine yourself, are you good at giving ?How many poor people have you assisted? lets not be wise on someone’s giving…Everyone has sth to give, poor or rich.

He has done a great Job, that’s a helping hand. We must learn to give sometimes than receiving all the time. China in the end can give more than what Atupele donated, Economically China is so rich which Malawi depends on and we are going to depend on them. Congratulations Atupele, you have done that for a reason thinking of tomorrow. So we must not criticise for the sake of commenting.we must comment sensibly that will help us.

My problem is not about rich and poor. Were the items made in malawi is my problem. My logic being that if they were made in singapore or china and were shipped here then we are shipping them back it makes no sense at all. Maybe we could help with something like gondolosi or more realistically foregoing the next batch of donation money to be used to help our friends. How do these politicians think?

Mwana wa a Tcheya uyu…mulekeni!! Bambo ake anamuuza kuti donate my son! And he complied! Go to APM…and he complied! This boy has no spurious e of his own …he is a puppet of his father!! The alliance is NOT for all Malawians but for the South! And more importantly for the Muluzis and Mutharikas. The good thing is Malawi is more than.the Southern region.. .people from the North and Center will do the needful and boot out Mulizi and Mutharika at the same time and we shell never see these two names in power again! We have already lost… Read more »

Why didn’t Atupele catch Coronavirus when he was in China? It reminds me of his father Bakili Muluzi donating exercise books to Saddam Hussein of Iraq back in 1994 or 1995 when there was shortage of exercise books in Malawi schools. Like father like son. Mutu wodzadza ndi ndele.

This boy is a confused soul. Just check on his decision making always off the mark. This guy will only do well in the Absence of Chair. Cos he is a political puppet of his father. Chair was supposed just to be an advisor not a puppet master.
