According to the mother of the baby, Tressa Mukoko Kasowa, 18, of Mateyu village, T/A Kaduya in Phalombe, the baby was delivered earlier same day at around 4pm in the maternity ward at the health centre.

And later at around 8pm, she left the baby in postnatal ward and went out to relieve herself, only to find out that the baby has been stolen when she returned to the ward.

“At the time of the incident, there was no electricity in the entire hospital facility and it is believedthat the culprits took advantage of the darkness to commit the crime,” explained Phalombe Police Public Relations Officer Sub-Inspector Augustus Nkhwazi.

A nurse-midwife technician who was on duty at the time of the incident reported that Kasowa had a normal delivery and that she was just being kept at the postnatal ward for observation.

“Efforts were made to search for it within the hospital campus but to no avail. Meanwhile, a case of Theft of Child has been opened and investigations are underway to trace the culprits,” added Sub-Inspector Nkhwazi.

The law-enforcers have since appealed to members of the public to report to the authorities if they see any person carrying a suspicious baby-girl.
