Belekanyama snubs Kaliwo in Malawi Congress Party convention drama
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) executive member and legislator Lingson Belekanyama has snubbed party secretary general Gustav Kaliwo who included his name in planning a controversial convention from July 7 to 9 .
Belekanyama said the convention being organised by Kaliwo is unlawful and he cannot be party to it.
“I refuse to be party to it,” said Belekanyama who Kaliwo listed him as deputy secretary for the organising committee.
Belekanyama, who is also a member of parliament for Lilongwe Msinja South, said he can only recognise a legitimate convention which has the blessings of the national executive committee (NEC) and not what Kaliwo is organising.
He said he would only accept a position confirmed by MCP president Lazarous Chakwera.
“There are procedures to be followed when you are preparing a convention. The Kaliwo convention is not for MCP,” he said.
Belekanyama cited Article 39 of the party’s constitution which mandates the NEC to call for a convention.
But Kaliwo, a lawyer by profession, insists the party constitutionally is supposed to hold conventions every year and he will hold it either in Zomba or Mangochi on July 7 to 9.
Kaliwo, who was handpicked by Chakwera after the elected SG Chris Daza left to join the People’s Party, is accused of being on a crusade to bring confusion in MCP with support of external forces.

Kaliwo has misplaced sense of power. He has never been elected by anyone to any position in the MCP. So, he does not even have any powers to convene a convention. That is where the argument starts and ends. As to whether his political career will end or not, you have to ask yourself first when Kaliwo became a politician.

the process of rebranding is not all that simple. i think Dr Chakwera knew it already that he would undergo these challenges and i hope he prepared himself. To mr kaliwo tell your sponsors that they are playing a loosing game which they won’t win. whether you like it or not Chakwera , day after day is adding winning votes. a day is coming when Malawians will say enough is enough.
You will dream forever. MCP won’t produce a state president. Gwanda tried and failed twice. Tembo tried and failed twice. Your novice Chakwera tried once and failed. A true democrat would have quit immediately.
To tell you the truth, Kalwo has never impressed me as a leader, not even as a lawyer. Bribes from DPP or whoever, have constipated you.
Just you wait. We still have almost 25 days to your illegal convention. So much can happen in that time.

Kaliwo, your mandate is within the confines of the president and not a convention. Count yourself lucky that Chakwera chose not to fire you outrightly.
Everyone knows that MCP needs new blood if it is to scale to new heights politically, and that was the reason why there was need for fresh elections across Malawi to elect new office bearers with the zeal to go into government or for the old guards who still felt had the energy to refresh their mandate.
One open fact is that these old guards have failed to propel MCP to new heights since democracy came in Malawi. Let them pave way for young blood and should support the young blood now holding the various offices across Malawi to attain that which they could not in their time.
Honestly speaking, the old guards had their time and it is evil and selfish of them to mobilize with a sole reason to distabilize the party they, across the years, claimed to love and support.
KALIWO, YOU ARE EVIL, AND IT SHALL NOT END WELL WITH YOU.

You can stay away from the convention if you want. Those of us who are solidily behind the democratic Secretary General Kaliwo will go to the convetion come July 7th. We will elect our president and the national executive committee. We will after that issue a press release asking anyone to get permission from our president before they can use any of our symbols, colours, offices, etc. Those who will not agree will be asked to go and form their own party. Our Party Guru Hon JZU will be in attendance at this convention.
If Kaliwo’s call for convention is unlawful and unconstitutional, why didn’t MCP challenge it in court. Keep fire burning Kaliwo. Don’t be intimidated. If MCP leadership can’t address internal rife, how can Malawians entrust them with leadership of the country. More fire Kaliwo. With you all the way.
Timing is very important in politics. This is not yet the best time to challenge this in court. We wait until the eleventh hour when is already spent in preparations.

MCP should wait until two days before the convention, then obtain an injunction stopping the convention after he has already booked the place. This way the money he has received from Ntaba will be wasted.

In event the convention takes place on July 7 to 9, 2017 then it will set a power struggle within the MCP similar to the one that ensued between Mr. John Tembo, whose side held the MCP convention at NRC in Lilongwe, and late Mr. Gwanda Chakuamba, whose team had its convention in Blantyre. The matter was taken to the High Court. However, courts in Malawi loath being used as political battle fields where politicians settle political scores. Injunctions and counter-injunctions are in the offing in this one. But then which side is propagating a true picture of what the constitution of the MCP say about calling for a convention? Does it require two-thirds majority to call for it? What do books dealing with law of clubs say about calling for a meeting of that nature? Who is mandated to call for it?
Kaliwo can honorably join his pay masters, the DPP, if he wants to save the remaining dignity in him. Otherwise this marks the end of his political carrier. I used to hold him in high esteem but as is the case with politics in Malawi, good brains get soiled by the love of money. This, unfortunately, is what has made the country to retrogress at the happiness of a few greedy political elite who are clueless at running the affairs of the state.
