The Blantyre Synod of the CCAP has elected top synod officials with Reverend Alex Maulana becoming the new secretary-general amidst reports that he was sponsored by Malawi Government and the ruling DPP.
Maulana, however denied being financed by DPP, saying I t was because he is a Lhomwe from Mulanje and people made ‘wrong’ conclusions.
He effectively becomes the Chief Executive Officer to run the Synod.
He replaces Reverend MacDonald Kadawati who was barred from seeking another term of office following controversies surrounding the involvement of former moderator Rev Reynold Mangisa and deputy general secretary Rev Austin Chimenya in politics.

“I will ensure during my tenure that the gospel is propagated appropriately,” Rev Maulana told Nyasa Times after being declared winner of the polls after a secret ballot by about 398 delegates.
“ I will work with everyone ,” he added.
Reverend Glenn Inglis, who serves as the Executive Director of the Blantyre Synod Development Commission, was the returning officer and declared the elections as fair and credible.
Rev. Cliff Nyekanyeka was elected as deputy secretary general. He will only serve for two years as he is continuing the term of fired Rev. Austin Chimenya.
The new spiritual leader of the Blantyre Synod is Rev. Mercy Chilapula who was elected Moderator. Her deputy is Rev. Andrew Kamponda.
