Call them Azit Hammers: Change goal, now eyes title

Newly promoted TNM Super League side, Ekwendeni Hammers, will now be called Azit Hamers  and has changed its goal from simply getting established in the league to competing for the title.

Ekwendeni : Now Azit Hammers

This is coming after the club went into partnership with Agri Zone International Trading (AZIT) Limited, a company that will be bankrolling it for the next five years.

Hammers will be getting over K40 million  a year as agreed in the deal. The team intends to change its name to encompass that of the sponsor but with guidance from the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and the Super League of Malawi (SULOM).

Senior official at the club, Gift Mkandawire (formerly Chairperson for Be Forward Wanderers Football Club), says changing the name of the club is vital as stipulated in the agreement between the sponsor and the club.

“I should first of all thank Mr Bonongwe for accepting to sponsor Ekwendeni Hammers.  We are okay to change the name of the club because AZIT will be bankrolling the club.

“We are part of AZIT and we will be propagating the products of AZIT,” Mkandawire said to local media.

Matthias Bonongwe, owner of AZIT, said paperwork will be finalized by the end of this week and the company has already given Hammers 1 Million Kwacha to enable the club start preparations in readiness for restart of the league.

“They need to use the money they will be given prudently and transparently. We expect government to consider us as partners in the agricultural sector where our business is rooted,” said Bonongwe.

Meanwhile, Ekwendeni Hammers have changed their goal from just staying in the league to contesting for the championship itself with this sound sponsorship.

“Our goal has shifted. Our players need to realise that now we need the championship. This should be a year that Mzuzu residents should smile after clinching the championship.

“It’s not easy to get sponsorship as we have done. We will try our best to sustain this sponsorship,” remarked Mkandawire.

Hammers are currently second on the TNM Super League log table with 19 points from 9 games.

Thanks for the support. But you don’t have to change the name of the club. Learn from your friends in other countries, the sponsor is advertised on the shirt sleeve etc but the name does not change.
