Carlsberg Malawi bails out Bullets, Nomads
Just a week after Nyasa Times broke news that Malawi’s soccer governing body, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has succeeded in identifying potential sponsors for local soccer power houses Mighty Wanderers and Big Bullets, latest reports indicate that the financier of the two rival teams is Carlsberg Malawi.
Nyasa Times sources at both FAM and Carlsberg Malawi have confirmed the development ending months of speculation.
Meanwhile, the sponsorship according to the sources is to be unveiled Tuesday at the College of Medicine sports complex.
“Yes, it is true the sponsor I have been talking about is Carlsberg Malawi, right now I don’t have more details but I have been reliably informed by the senior officials of FAM including the president and his General Secretary that Carlsberg has approved FAM’s proposal and the whole deal will be unpacked tomorrow in Blantyre,” said our source at FAM who is one of the executive members.
“Carlsberg has agreed to sponsor both Bullets and Nomads,” added the source.
Carlsberg Malawi Group Marketing Manager Glynth Mchiela told Nyasa Times refused to confirm or deny, saying, “Well why can’t you wait up until tomorrow (May 29) and find out if at all what you are telling me is true or that is all I can say, thanks.”
Both Bullets and Wanderers have been swimming in financial troubles after they both lost their sponsorships some years back and ironically the two teams have been surviving on contributions from officials in order to honour league fixtures.
In a bid to end the sponsorship drought that hit the two most successful clubs on the land, FAM president Walter Nyamilandu during his re-elections campaign last year promised to find lucrative sponsorship for the two giants.
