Catholic organization Marriage Encounter donates to Kasungu Hospital maternity ward

A Central Region Catholic organization called Marriage Encounter has donated medical equipment which include infant radiant warmer and medical screens worth K4 million to Kasungu District Hospital.

Infant radiant warmer donated

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Sunday, Marriage Encounter regional coordinator Dr Paul Kulemeka, said it was their duty as a church organization to conduct charity work and save lives, especially in maternity wards where death rate of babies and even mothers is reported to be high.

“After being consulted by our fellow members here that Kasungu was lacking an extra machine called ‘infant radiant warmer’ and other resources for the maternity section, we thought it wise as an organization to help as one of the charity works which our church encourages us to do.

“So, we are happy that we have fulfilled our wish and we hope this will reduce deaths of premature babies,” said Kulemeka.

In her remarks, Kasungu District Medical officer, Dr Lizzie Msowoya said she appreciated what the organization had done and that the donation had come in time. She expressed hope the machine would save born premature babies, saying the hospital had registered high cases of premature births.

“We really appreciate what central region Marriage Encounter organization (CRME) has done because our maternity needed another ‘infant radiant warmer machine’ which helps to warm up premature babies. So with this, there is hope that things will be better now,” she said.

However, Dr Msowoya asked for more assistance from other organizations, saying the hospital would appreciate and welcome any kind of donation.

“It doesn’t need to be an extravagant thing; a donation is a donation whether it’s small or not. It will help us in one way or the other, so we are calling out for such donations,” pleaded Msowoya.

Principal Administrative Officer for Kasungu District Council, Thomas Mwafongo also appreciated the donation which he described as a contribution to the development of the district.

“This is a new development because lives of these babies will be saved and will later contribute to different development activities which will take Kasungu and the country to the next step,” said Mwafongo.

Marriage Encounter is an organisation founded in 1985 in Rome, Italy. It supports married couples on daily basis and has members in all the regions of Malawi who perform different charity activities with funds raised from their personal pockets.
