Chakwera appoints Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda as new Attorney General

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has appointed Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda as Attorey General (AG) replacing Dr. Chikosa Mozesi Silungwe, who was fired in July this year.

Silungwe was a lead lawyer for the Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima in the famous Presidential Elections Case.

Hence, some officials in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), including Cabinet ministers, are suspecting that his legal opinions were calculated to frustrate the Chakwera administration.

In brief statement issued this evening, the Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC), Zanga-Zanga Chikhosi, says Chakwera has now appointed Chakaka Nyirenda as the new AG.

“The appointment is with effective from August 27, 2021,” concludes the brief statement from Chikhosi.

Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda did not immediately pick our calls when we sought his reaction on the appointment.

Nyirenda has been a long serving Legal Officer at the Reserve bank of Malawi having joined in July 2010.

  3. Good move Mr President, no taxpayers money will be lost here….

    Chakaka Nyirenda will continue receiving the salary he was getting from Reserve bank of Malawi while the former AG, Mr Silungwe will continue receiving his salary until his contract runs out.

    So basically Mr Chakaka Nyirenda is doing Mr Silungwe’s work but it is Mr Silungwe who is being paid for it as Mr Chakaka Nyirenda is on secondment from Reserve Bank of Malawi therefore getting the same salary he was getting from his old employer……..cool move Mr President for saving taxpayers money.

    My only plea to the old AG Mr Silungwe is that he should ask himself a moral question on whether he thinks he is doing the right thing to his mother country by receiving a salary every month for doing nothing just because he got fired before his contract expired…….I know by law there is nothing wrong with that but from a moral perspective, what does this say about your moral values……Mr Silungwe himself knows that the president was left with no choice but to fire him because of the many mishaps that were happening in his office under his watch.

    The AG’s role to to give legal advice to the government and also protect the government legally regardless of what the AG’s personal opinion is on the matter ….but Mr Silungwe was acting against the very same government he was employed to serve and protect…….if I were Mr Silungwe I would accept my mistakes and walk away without claiming taxpayers money that I am note working for or entitled to.
