Chakwera-Mia help flood victims with money raised by MCP: Promises permanent solutions

Over 2000 people affected by floods in Nsanje district had on Sunday, March 17, 2019 managed to smile again after president of Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Lazarus Chakwera paid them a visit and on behalf of the party donated tonnes of relief food following deadly floods.

Severe flooding in the recent days has affected nearly a million people. At least 45 people are reported to have died, while tens of thousands have been displaced.

Chakwera alongside his running mate Sidik Mia and other party officials visited 1,760 victims at Nyachikadza before visiting 416 more at Mankhokwe camp in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Ndakwera.

Speaking in both camps, the MCP leader promised that, after assuming the reigns of power, his government will utilize expertize and knowledge on water management acquired from other countries which dealt with similar problem of floods to control the flow of Shire River through construction of dykes and dredging.

Chakwera also conquered with Mia about the plan by MCP to construct better houses roofed by iron sheets in the uplands which the people can use as their dwelling during heavy rains.

Expressing deep concern over the peoples’ plight due to loss of lives, houses, crops and other property,  Chakwera said he had learnt about the occurrence of floods when the MCP was launching its manifesto in Lilongwe.

He had therefore requested contributions from party members and the money was used to purchase tonnes of maize flour and pegion peas, which was donated on the day.

In his remarks, Mia thanked Chakwera for not taking a rest after his long trip from the United States of America (USA) where he attended a funeral of a long time friend but found it important to reach out to the flood victims with food relief.

Before Chakwera and Mia, the party’s National Campaign Director, Moses Kunkuyu bemoned government’s lip service on the much touted “Malata and Cement Subsidy Programme” which has not benefitted the people of the Shire Vallay and in particular, the people of Nsanje South affected by floods.

Said Kunkuyu: “If  these people had benefited from the so called malata and cement subsidy then they couldn’t have been affected by the floods. In other words, these people are present here at the camp because government had lied to the them about the programme which is just benefitting a few supporters and loyalists of the governing DPP.”

In the recent days, Mia together with his wife Abida,  who is also MCP Shadow MP for Chikwawa Nkombedzi Constituency, have been on relief food distribution exercise in several camps of Chikwawa and Nsanje where flood victims are seeking shelter after their houses and property got destroyed by the floods.

Those blind party followers who say that there is nothing that can be done against floods reduction and management show their of lack of knowledge in disaster preparedness and management. There are measures both short and long terms to mitigate the impact. Let them ask DODMA. Winayi ndiumbulu wowonetsa pagulu. Didnt they hear their leader talking about the measures?
Hurricate catrina akuyinenawo idakhala kuno wamoyo adakapezekapo? With measures impact can minimised, Ku Japan kukachitika earth equake very few people die why? It is because there are measures to reduce severity of impact

Natural calamities can not be permanently resolved controlled, can you resolve rains, winds, earthquakes etc?
This guy sometimes rush to speak without thinking.

Kapado Chimuthawirenji

There can be no permanent solution to natural disasters – that is a blue lie. The US and some parts of Europe face challenges of this sort every year and yet they have adequate resources including sophisticated early warning systems, but God is unchallengeable. Met experts had predicted that Cyclone Idai would hit Malawi once again last week, but look what happened – it suddenly changed direction to hit Zimbabwe instead. Be realistic in what you say you fools.

Friend stop writing nonsense. The shire Valley is a different case, a tangible solution can be found. Those people construct their houses on lower grounds and along the river banks. If they can be moved and be given land uplands where houses can be constructed we won’t be talking about this issue every year about the lower shire floods. Bingu once suggested this and he wanted to do it but politics came into play bcoz the people say the lands where they live belong to there fore fathers and they can’t desert them. You can’t compare the floods that happen… Read more »

The floods are not for the lower shire only, what about karonga, phalombe, balaka, Do you remember the Nasolo river burst its banks too? Mozambique, Zimbabwe are all affected with floods even in Blantyre City we had floods. Everywhere flooding can take place, we have destroyed the environment and we are good at blaming the government, Yourself what are you doing to mitigate this? Have you planted even a single tree at your house or rented home? Or at your garden/farm?

This comment is coming from a DPP looser. Natural Disasters like the ones experienced in Malawi have remedies which have worked in other parts of the world. We are talking about floods, if you have acurate warning systems and option dwelling sites plus information flow charts where people can move to, unlike schools or churches. I am talking from experience and not politics.
