Chakwera moves to excite families of martyrs: Orders Justice Minister to facilitate compensations

Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has ordered the Ministry of Justice to quickly facilitate compensation of all political families whose guardians died while fighting for the freedom that the country is enjoying today.

Speaking in Nkhata-Bay during the commemoration of this year’s matyrs day, Chakwera said compesating their families is the best way forward in as far of thanking them is concerned.

Chakwera said the matyrs did not die in vain, because they wanted to liberated this country which indeed happened.

Chakwera also expressed concern that there are other foreigners who come in the country to exploit the nation.

He said he will not allow this to continue. He said people should not take advantage of their money to in exchange of disturbing peace and diginity.

Earlier in the day, Chakwera laid wreaths at the Nkhata bay Heroes Acre in order to honour the fallen heroes.

On 3 March , 1959, over 50 Malawians who were protesting against british leadership , were gunned down and intered in mass grave apart from the ring leader who was buried separately.

Chakwera was accompanied by the Malawi Vice President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima.

Earlier the day, President and First Lady Madam Monica Chakwera laid wreaths at a memorial Tower that was built in honor of the fallen heroes.

The Excellencies also laid wreaths at Kakumbi Cemetery.

Other high ranking government officials including  former Vice President Khumbo Hastings Kachale; Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa; Chiefs and the Clergy, are all in attendance.

The activities continue with Memorial Prayers taking place at Nkhata Bay Hospital Ground.

A wreath laying ceremony is a traditional practice during which wreaths are laid at a grave or memorial site. It is done as a formal sign of respect and honour.
