Chakwera refuses to tackle Mutharika’s Sona speech: Justifies MCP exodus in Parliament

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera – who sworn in to start his second term as a member of Parliament (MP) and possibly Leader of Opposition, depending on outcome of the election petition case in the Constitutional Court – has said he will not respond to President Peter Mutharika’s state of the nation address as is the tradition.

Chakwera: State of no action to Sona
MCP legislators walk out of Parliament

At a news conference on Saturday in Lilongwe, Chakwera said he would not respond to the Sona because Mutharika is an illegitimate president.

“I cannot respond to what an illegitimate president says,” said Chakwera, who alongside UTM Party president Saulos Chilima, is contesting the results of the May 21 presidential election, citing irregularities.

The two have dragged Mutharika and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to Court over what they say manipulation of presidential results.

Chakwera backed the decision by MCP members of parliament who booed and boycotted the Sona.

“They did this to express the will of most Malawians who took to the streets in protest the day before to express their rejection of  Mutharika’s presumption to be president despite overwhelming evidence that he occupies that office through fraud,” Chakwera told the media.

Members of Parliament according to Chakwera represent the people, and so it is proper that the people’s representatives stood with their constituents in this way.

Chakwera, however,  condemned violence which followed the civil society activists organized peaceful protests.

“This was done by a few misguided individuals who do not represent our cause of peace and justice in spirit or deed,” said Chakwera.

He also condemned the police who fired teargas at peaceful people who had gone to the High Court on Friday to hear the verdict of the preliminary objections of the high profile election case.

Kodi mmesa chisankho chinabeledwa? Nde ma MP awa achoka kuti? Palibe amene anawina apa. I am just wondering why if pressed, these MPs can never produce evidence because even their results sheets were also tippexed. If your results had tippex, you did not win. Tivotenso. A Chakwela munakalumbila ngati MP, why? I thought you are contesting against the results. Koma chifukwa chakuti munapangidwa declare winner then chisankho cha MP chinayenda bwino. A Chakwela, ngati muli serious about contesting against the election results then you were not supposed to chose and pick, you could have just denied everything and insist that… Read more »

What Chakwera and his stupid MPs are saying is that they are all illegitimate members of Parliament. To prove their stupidity just ask them, including Chakwera himself, if they were sworn in as MPs. Ask them if the elections that declared them MPs were legitimate. Ask them if the elections were held on 21 May 2019 alongside presidential elections. Ask them the name of the MEC chairperson who declared them winners. Is that not absurd that the MCP MPs are attending parliament despite being illegitimate. These MCP MPs should not be allowed to get any allowances from parliament because they… Read more »

Dr. Chakwera, who needs you to comment on the SONA? It is only good for your Party. You pretend as you own Malawi nothing happens unless your fake English is heard. As a friend said the SONA was above average for low minded individual to comment anything.

Chakwera is uttering nonsense; and simply reacting based on his reptilian brain.
No advanced thinking apa.
I expect more logical reasoning for a man of his education.
Just follow in line, Bwana, and accept for now that APM is the President of this country. And this is a fact. No “ifs” of “buts”.

So what puzzles me big time is everyone is going on about justice blah blah blah …. your MCP leader and his pastor Thom have already purchased land to build two hotels!!!! Ask yourselves where is putting the people of Malawi first here? Once again it’s about politicians getting rich and bleeding Malawi dry and sadly neglecting the poor and their needs!! They use God as a shield to portrait themselves as Good Godly people!!!! Sadly NOT. No leader is any better than the other in my opinion here!! So the good old saying better the devil you know then… Read more »
