Chanco alumni association formed

In a bid to achieve sustainability of college resources for posterity, the Alumni Association of Chancellor College (AACC) has been born with an outright appeal to all alumni of Chancellor College both living in the country and in diaspora to join and support its cause.

In a statement made available to Nyasa Times, the Alumni Association of Chancellor College (AACC) recognises the existence of an association of the Alumni for the entire University of Malawi but admits that Chancellor College is yet to reap the fruits of such an association as partly evident in the continued dilapidated state of the college.

“We have learnt with great concern that enrolment into the University of Malawi keeps growing every year in a bid to improve access to higher education to many young Malawians across the country which has led to poor student – resource ratio especially at Chancellor College,” the statement reads.

“Besides, there has been steady moral decadence amongst students leading to inadequate and misuse of resources. It is therefore in view of this that AACC is born in order to mobilize resources worth to facelift Chancellor College and also to enforce understanding of social and moral responsibility among stakeholders,” reads part of the statement signed by Billington Mulenga, Raphael Kishombe and Amon Peter Mwaisumo.

As part of its specific objectives, AACC aims to solicit resources for the Chancellor College clinic, import new furniture for lecture rooms, raise funds to access books and computers for departments, petition for hostels support from individual alumni for their respective former halls of residence.

The association also wants to implant social and moral responsibility among students and other stakeholders.

It will conduct meetings with alumni in all the major cities of Malawi, Chancellor College administration, Non Governmental Organisations, private companies, financial institutions and all other relevant stakeholders.

“We appeal to all alumni of Chancellor College, both Soche and Chilunga campuses, since 1965, to come together in good will to support the college so as to ensure that the present and future generations enjoy the same glory of being at a university as we did.

“We also call for patriotism and passion from the alumni and all interested stakeholders by attending get-together meetings to be held in due course in a Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba and Mzuzu”, reads the statement which, apart from Chancellor College alumni, is also addressed to the Principal of Chancellor College, media institutions, the private sector and also Non-government organizations
