Mpando: Died

It’s believed he was not able to swim.

“He drowned and his body was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. A post-mortem result indicated he had died of suffocation.,” Chitowe said.

But a relative however said Mpando had drowned after jumping into a lake to save a friend who fell into the deeper water and got into difficulty.

Mpando’s college mates said he was a disciplined student. Chancellor College is closed due to long drawn impasse on academic freedom.

Recently a 26-year-old teacher at Ulongwe Community Day Secondary School in Mangochi and a fisherman in Nkhotakota also drowned in fresh waters of Lake Malawi .
