Chilomoni Metro gutted: Malawi continue to be on fire

It’s becoming the order of the day, fire here, fire there, fire everywhere. People’s Metro shop in Chilomoni Township, Blantyre on Monday night became the latest statistic as fire gutted the shop.

Firefighters were reportedly quick to respond but their capacity to put down the blaze proved ineffective

The cause of fire has not yet been established.

There has been concerns with the spate of fires that have affected a number of markets in the country.

Meanwhile, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa who inspected the unoccupied Limbe Flea Market and Limbe Main Market, said the problem is that many of the country’s markets are made of makeshift materials such as card-boards and woods.

Nankhumwa said as a solution “ government is coming in by constructing fireproof markets.”

He said such markets are going to attract insurers , saying as it is now, “ no insurer would want to insure a market that is makeshift and is covered up with card-boards and wooden boxes.”

  1. Why only in DPP times? OK at mec it was to destroy evidence. What about these businesses? Nyasa can you please provide a summary of who have been the contractors to rebuild when these places go down. Not just the company name but the faces behind it…. we may find something

  2. Not a big surprise, the name Malawi has its roots in some sort of fire. What do you expect when your national soccer team is nicknamed, the flames?

  3. Of course Malawi means Flames and flames come from FIRE. Especially chauta akakufulatirani due to mapwevupwevu

  4. This is politics. People are deliberately setting up these fires for political reasons. A Malawi MULUNGU azakulangani.

  5. Chimene chatsala pano ndikusowetsa forex kekana kupwetsa mafuta muzitsime ndi cholinga choti moyo ufuke powawitsa, kenaka madalayu atule pansi udindo. Musadabwe, wakutsina khutu ndi mnansi.

  6. I don’t support this in the strongest terms! I am not DPP but l don’t understand the logic between the fires and the leadership. It was also a trend in the first DPP but the problem is that this affects innocent people who have nothing to do with politics. Malawians, let’s obtain updated mindsets.
