China virus: Malawi steps up detection at airports

Government has stepped up the detection of  killer corona virus which has so far killed about 300 people, leaving 8000 people sick in China.

Ministry of health has since given out face masks to all airport workers

The ministry of health has since given out face masks to all airport workers at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe and Chileka airport in Blantyre.

Some workers at Kamuzu International Airport said the ministry has sensitized the airport workers with basic skills on how to protect themselves from the disease which has left experts scratching their heads over its medicine.

Ministry of Health principal secretary Dan Namarika said the government would handle the disease if detected in the country.

Malawi is home to many Chinese people who run businesses and work in the construction industry.

The disease is yet to hit Africa although Botswana has registered suspected cases.

More than 13,000 cases have been confirmed and a small proportion of those – around 100 – have been identified outside China. The UK, US, Russia and Germany have all confirmed cases in recent days.

The World Health Organization said on Sunday that a man had died from the virus in the Philippines – the first confirmed fatality from the coronavirus outside China.

  1. Where are the officials / medical attendants at the airport. Officers have been given masks. What about gloves when these officers check passports, baggage , etc, Great achievement. How will these officers identify suspected virus carriers.

Where are the thermometers to detect?

Even china is asking for help from EU for medicines and we are still scratching our heads for the way forward
