In an interview with Sky News, Chaponda said comedians will now be concerned when they tell jokes on stage.
He said what happened during the Oscar night was unfortunate.
He said: “I am a fan of both guys and I have very mixed feelings, but I think that as a comedian all you do is try to make people laugh.
“People say anything to make people laugh.
“Sometimes you will cross lines and sometimes you will say things that other people consider unacceptable, irreverent, but all you are doing is trying to make people happy.”
