Cost of living hits hard Blantyre residents

A survey has shown that Blantyre residents have been hit hard by the rise in cost of living.

Some people’s money budget

The Centre for Social Concern says a family of six in Blantyre would need K205579.

Charcoal and utility bills are among commodities that pushed the cost of living up in January.

Karonga was singled out as the cheapest place to live with an average of K154361 for a family of six.

On average, the Centre for Social Concern says a family of six in Malawi needed K183000 to survive in January, up from K174000 in December for the same number of family members.

The centre says this was a jump of five percent of cost of living compared to 15 percent in December.

It says a 50kg bag of maize was selling at K11000 in January.
