MP Mwenifumbo opposes plans to move refugee camp to Karonga
Karonga Central MP Frank Mwenifumbo stunned the government when he vehemently rejected plans to move Dzaleka Refugee camp from Dowa to Karonga.
Making his contribution in parliament on mid term budget review statement, the frank talking Mwenifumbo said the move was against the wishes of the people of Karonga.
“People of Karonga feel they were not consulted enough,” said the independent member of parliament.
He said the land mass in Karonga is very limited and the area is prone to floods and drought.
“The food producrtion is always very low,” said Mwenifumbo.
However, Home Affairs minister Grace Chiumia said she was surprised with the remarks by Mwenifumbo.
“He has been part of the people that has been widely consulted, he was among a group of people from Karonga who went to Dzaleka on a study tour recently,” she said.
Chiumia said the government is going ahead with its plans to move the 29000 capacity refugee camp to Karonga, saying Chief Kyungu and other leaders in Karonga had already given ago ahead to the idea.
She said others might be refusing to have the camp in Karonga for political reasons.
