Council fires 24 employees for misappropriation of public funds

Officials from Nkhotakota District Council say the council has fired 24 employees over suspected theft if public funds.
The council’s spokesperson, Stanley Nkhondoyachepa alleged the 24 were not remitting to the council the funds they were collecting in different markets and bus depots in the district.

According to Nkhondoyachepa, despite several warnings, the direct employees, mostly revenue collectors, continued with the malpractice; hence, the decision.
But one of the fired employees, Levison Chimbayo, who was employed by the council in 2014, has described the action as laughable.
He said the employees were engaging their lawyer on the matter.
