Court acquits Chief and National Registration Bureau clerk

A National Registration Bureau (NRB) Clerk, Masauko Mondwe, 26 and Village Head Man (VHM) Kanyamba, real name Michael Mbalame, 58  are counting their blessings after the Dowa Second Grade Magistrate Court released them and walked into freedom because the State did not bring prosecution witnesses in their case.

Mondwe, and the VHM Kanyamba were picked by Kanengo police because it was alleged that they were involved in shoddy deal of selling national registration certificates in the ongoing National Registration exercise.

Second Grade Magistrate Ezekiel Kantikana said in determination that the two accused men should be let free because of lack of substantial evidence in the charge of Seeking influence of the decision of district registrar illegally, which is contrary to section 43, sub section C of NRB act.

Dowa Police Publicist Richard Mwakayoka Kaponda said Mondwe who comes from Chilangala Village in TA Nthalire in Chitipa and Mbalame who is from Kanyamba vVllage, TA Mkukula in Dowa were arrested on July 9 at Chuzu Registration Centre in Mkukula, after informers tipped the police that they were selling national registration forms.

“The case has been withdrawn temporarily under section 81 A of Criminal Procedure and Evidence code, since people who could have been witnesses ran away,” confirmed Kaponda.
