Court stops Benson’s forced leave at MBC

The High Court in Blantyre has granted an injunction to Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) Director General Benson Tembo stopping government from sending him on forced leave.

Tembo sought court relief after Evans Namanja, MBC board chairman directed his immediate leave in a letter on Friday.

Namanja said the MBC boss has been sent packing for failing to take “lawful instructions” from authorities.

But Tembo argued that he has been sent on forced leave for the “professional coverage” of the elections by the national broadcaster which annoyed the incumbent President Joyce Banda, trailing on third position in the presidential race.

MBCtv and radio did not broadcast live president Joyce Banda’s press briefing. The station recorded president Banda’s press briefing and aired it in equal segments with other presidential candidates.

The court has since reinstated Tembo, a veteran broadcaster.
