DPP concedes ‘painful’ by-election defeat: Dausi defiant MCP will not rule Malawi in  2019

Malawi government spokesman and Minister of Information and Communications Technology Nicholas Dausi has said the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has conceded defeat  in three constituencies and three Local Government wards  which opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has won  in five out of the six areas.

Smiling Dausi congratulates a female member of MCP, the party he once served as vice president

Dausi in an interview  – sounding jovial though  -after Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah  declared official results at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre on Wednesday afternoon which  confirmed that voters rejected DPP, said the governing party indeed suffered   a bloody nose in the pre-2019 election test.

He however said DPP had come a “decent second” to MCP in the contest.

“This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, but we will go back to the drawing board and do a soul searching so that we correct where we went wrong  and  not face the similar situation in the next coming Trippatite Election,” he said.

“We are accepting  the painful defeat but I can confidently tell Malawians and all DPP members  that we have just lost the battle  and not the  real war. We will come out strong in 2019 polls,” he said.

He  dismissed analysts who argued that the by-elections were a litmus test for 2019 polls..

“Let me remind them that in 1999 MCP MP’s won by-elections in Mzimba but they lost miserably in the same areas during general elections so they should expect this again in 2019,” esaid  Dausi.

He denied that the loss is  highly embarrassing for President Peter Mutharika, who has made a series of high-profile visits to the areas  in a bid to shore up the DPP vote.

The by-elections were held in Nsanje Lalanje Constituency and Ndirande Makata Ward in Blantyre Malabada Constituency in the Southern Region and Lilongwe City South East and Lilongwe Msozi North constituencies as well as Mtsiriza Ward in Lilongwe City West Constituency and Mayani North Ward in Dedza North Constituency in the Central Region.

MEC chair Ansah, a judge of the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal, congratulated the winners, advising that they have “a social contract”with the people and that they should  go out to implement it.

“I urge you to celebrate with responsibility. For those who have not made it, I say there can only be one winner and this time it is not you,” said Ansah.

MEC official results indicated that MCP won hby-elections were held in Nsanje Lalanje Constituency and Ndirande Makata Ward in Blantyre Malabada Constituency in the Southern Region and Lilongwe City South East and Lilongwe Msozi North constituencies as well as Mtsiriza Ward in Lilongwe City West Constituency  but lost to DPP the  Mayani North Ward in Dedza North Constituency in the Central Region.

By-elections in Lilongwe City South East followed  a Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal order for a rerun after noting irregularities in the parliamentary race on May 20 2014 whereas in the other five areas the vacancies arose following deaths of office holders.

The court nullified the May 20 2014 parliamentary results in Lilongwe City South East Constituency that declared Bentley Namasusu of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) winner.

MCP contestant in the elections, Ulemu Msungama, challenged the results on the basis of irregularities, something the court upheld.

The Tuesday’s by-elections has vindicated Msungama who won the poll in credible polls.

Crippling unemployment, economic turmoil and corruption scandals in government  led voters to punish the DPP in areas where MCP gained victories.

Mr Bustards, When Bingu was in power people stood in platforms telling people that Bingu and his DPP have failed Malawians. PAC stood behind opposition saying and giving ultimatum to Bingu. Within a few months Bingu died and people said God answered their prayers. DPP which thought would go into the elections with Bingu campaigning for Peter was shocked with the death. With the death of those thieves in Mzuzu Joyce Banda decampaigned the DPP and fought for its destruction. Now Bustard tell me why did people brought back the party to power if people were tired as per PAC… Read more »

Accept defeat. This is an embarassment to Peter Muthalika and his arrogant team. Think about this. DPP had seats in Ntchisi, Dowa, Kasungu, Lilongwe, Dedza East, Salima and the whole north in 2009. Where are those seats? people are tired with your theft of our taxes. People are fed up with lack of development. People are fed up with poverty. People are fed up with black outs. This is price of sinners. The price is death. I have said Peter is not fit to be a president. His heart is not in Malawi as per new Lucius Banda’s song. Kamuzu had… Read more »

Childish for Dauusi to say its not an embarrassment for the President who had traveled all the way from Lilongwe to Nsanje spending millions of tax payers’ money only to score a zero in this regard. This is how you are cheating the President. Fosteki.

Dausi must stop talking on TV and on Radio as if he is acting on drama. This is Malawi and not a recreation hall. As a Minister of Information, he must prepare notes of what he wants to communicate to the public……a serious minded public for that matter. He must not fool himself that he is a good public speaker. What people expect to hear are facts and not dramatized words. He is not a good Min. of Information at all. He fits well into an entertainment director. However, come 2019, we should expect a landslide victory for APM and… Read more »

Serebwede, which landslide victory and in which country? maybe in South Sudan.

You guys are totally in denial and think that Malawians are stupid. APM is done and nothing is left of him. He messed up big time and there is no reversal. Malawians know his true colors and that he is a failure. Do not think you will steal the elections like you did in 2014,mwagwa nayo. Real change is on the horizon and DPP will not stop it- it’s too late. Keep dreaming while you watch the falling of your party.

Dausi tell them that regionalism in Malawi is real and didn’t end with this mere by-elections. If Southerners are tired of DPP the very last alternative will be MCP. Somebody will do the Trump magic defying all opinion polls to carry the hopes and aspirations of the Southerners. We have Atupele, Joyce Banda, Ralph Juma, Korea Mpatsa and Mia himself. And if anything if Mia’s political clout can be measured by MCP success in these by-elections then he is wasting his time being “wapakaliyala” he should go it alone. My take on the by-elections results is only one surprise and… Read more »

Kodi Che Million akufuna ayankhule chani kwenikweni? How or why would Mayani by-election be different from Ndirande ward? Why were others foregone conclusions or with obvious outcomes and not Mayani,? Mwaonatu kuti zomawawatu??? But you seem to be a beneficiary of tribalism and regionalism hence a proponent and an expert of the same. You are definitely unhappy that ddp has lost these elections and more so you cannot stomach the fact Mia, a southerner,(with apparent political influence) is not a torch-bearer or presidential candidate at the moment. To you anthu akumwela sangankhale pa carrier. In essence southerners are bonafide leaders… Read more »

What do you expect from Dausi??? He is holding his position because of appeasement, he does not deserve it. Ife akale know you better and if DPP is out of govt, udzayamba kumphepa mchere kumaneba. Dyeranitu mwakula as the writing is on the wall otherwise if you recycle back to MCP you will be given the post of Area Chairman, period.

@queen. God does not vote. It is people who vote. Hence it is people who put other people into position of power. That’s why people in power must be responsible and accountable to the people who voted for them into office.

@masa masina, God doesn’t vote indeed, but go to the Book of Daniel you will see that God elevated and chose leaders like Nebuchardnezzer , Darius , Alexander the great, back in time he Chose David the smallest from the sons of Jesse, God chose David because he saw leadership in him. Hence concerning the point you are crushing here you are totally wrong. God will help his people in Malawi to chose a leader who will bring changes to the life of Malawians.
