DPP fires secretary general Jeffrey: Ben Phiri resigns as elections director

The erstwhile ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has fired its  Secretary General Grezelder Jeffrey  after she declined to resign from her position as instructed by the party president Peter Mutharika.

Jeffrey ruffled the feathers of Mutharika when she said the former president should retire as she and other leaders in the party are calling for an early convention to elect a new leader.

She said Mutharika—who led the party back into government in May 2014 after two years in opposition after the death of its founding president Bingu wa Mutharika—has done his part; hence, DPP needs a new person to lead it into the future.

DPP lost in the June 23 2020 Fresh Presidential Election to the nine-party Tonse Alliance led by MCP president Lazarus Chakwera who partnered Mutharika’s then estranged Vice-President Saulos Chilima of UTM Party on the presidential ticket.

But posting on his Facebook page on July 23, Mutharika said he will not leave the party and pledged to continue fighting to the end.

Wrote the former president: “Come next election, DPP will be bouncing back into government and I will render all my support to make sure this is achieved as we did between 2012 and 2014.

“Malawians have already seen that their much-touted change has not brought them the change they were looking for. I, therefore, call upon all DPP supporters to remain strong and vigilant, united and principled so that we achieve this together.”

Peter Mutharika took over the leadership of DPP after the death of his brother, Bingu wa Mutharika in April 2012, propelling the party to victory in the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

Meanwhile, Ben Phiri has resigned as director of elections of DPP but has not withdrawn his party membership.

In a letter dated August 17 2020, Phiri said he has resigned because DPP lost the fresh presidential elections under his stewardship as director of elections.

Phiri said he cannot claim to have any “fresh and viable strategies to spur the party into another victory having lost the past one.”

He said his resignation will “pave way for fresh minds to take the party forward.”

  1. Typical of a failed leader, as dull as ever.
    It takes time to repair a damage and APM should know that Tonse Alliance government cannot bring change in just three months to a system which was messed up in over six years.
    My advice to real DPP followers is that any equation in DPP’s rebranding MUST never include APM and the likes of Mphepo, Muli, Mchacha, Phiri, WA Jeffrey, Ntaba, Dausi and several such soothsayers. The review must start from a completely new slate.

  10. APM is 85 and I believe that he knows full well that he won’t be back to Kamuzu’s. This said, DPP must be very careful going forward. DPP must not bet on the failure of the Tonse folks. The jury is still out and will be out for sometime. DPP must not also divide itself up into fraction as it can’t win if it is divided. Hense the importance of APM who must play a role as he slowly handle the party to a new leader over the next 12 months or so. It is interesting time and I really hope that he will play this role. I do talk to him occasionally and I am waiting for the right moment to bring this matter up.

DPP needs to wake and smell the coffee, People who are asking for change of leadership are right, APM cannot be the Leader going forward, he is very aloof, detached, and clueless, if DPP is to stand a chance in 2025, it needs to seriously re-brand now and Nankhuma, Dausi, Chaponda, Mwanamveka, Mussa, Ben Phiri, Atupele should not be anywhere near the top hierrchay

  14. These are the sig s that the Party is undemocratic, is she lying? Mutharika needs to take an advisory role in the Party. And he must cut his umbilical cord to the Party completely not like what Chair did, hoping to be pulling strings from behind the scene. There and then the Party will die completely.

  15. Chipani chamala ichi. Muthalika wati mbu? At his age he thinks he will be strong enough in 2025. He will be 85 and already he was the second oldest president in Africa after Paul Biya. I think Muthalika has a problem and makes unilateral and suicidal decisions. Please you should know that if you won the 2014 elections it was because people thought you were like your brother. That time we did not have wise judges who would not interpret the difference between “majority” and “plurality”.

  17. Mutharika is agood guy BUT not in touch with people. I know this lady wants Nankhumwa. If Nankhumwa becomes president, this is the end of this party. The guy, apart from NOT being presidential material, is a proper snitch. Ask Kaliati.

    The peolpe that surrounded peter took advantage of his detachment and ruled behind the scenes and made a huge mess of it.

  19. It shows Ben has matured as compared to APM. It seems APM thinks he can win in 2025. How old will he be? It is better for DPP to rebrand before 2025. Otherwise, it will be like UDF.

Have you forgotten that this lady performed exceptionally well in ensuring that DPP gets some votes in the central region? Do you think you still have some reserves of energy in your tank to stand again in 2025? Oh! My DPP, and by the way, Francis Mphepo who do you think you are? How do you people expect to bounce back if you start firing loyal and charismatic members of the party, oh, my god. Peter, you are saying we should be strong and vigilant, united and principled, with this kind of childish behaviour don’t you think you are sending a strong message that your party has not changed at all, and that you do not deserve even a single seat in parliament. My somple advice to you bwana Peter Mutharika is that please! step aside, pave way for new blood that will resuscitate the party, otherwise you are just a spent force.     1. She hasn’t resigned. She has been fired. That doesn’t mean she wasn’t royal to the Party. It means she no longer believes in the leadership of Peter Munthalika. Honestly she is right i don’t see Munthalika bouncing back with Peter.

    1. who has written the letter of firing because she was the SG herself. This party by end of this year will be all in tatters because it is full of greedy people. It is not surprising to see Ben Phiri resign because him and Henry Mussa were involved in double dealing with UTM.
