DPP gives opposition to Covid vaccines indemnity agreement between Malawi govt and manufacturer

The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has said it will be forced to go to court to seek protection of the lives and health Malawi citizens over Covid-19 vaccine,  saying it is “horrified” to learn that government  has  decided to enter an indemnity agreement with manufacturers against liability over any harm emanating the vaccines.

Mpinganjira: Issued the statement

A  statement  issued by DPP  spokesperson Brown Mpinganjira  on Friday comes amidst some circuclation myths about the vaccine on social media and on WhatsApp religiously targeted claiming claim the vaccines contain animal produce – eating pork goes against the religious beliefs of Muslims

The DPP says it has not been provided with the exact and full terms of the indemnity and has demanded that the document of indemnity must be made public for all Malawians to appreciate its purpose and import.

“As everyone is now aware, the Covid-19 vaccine is shrouded in controversy. Its safety, especially to Africans, is suspect. This is perhaps why the manufacturers of the vaccine are demanding from obsequious governments such as the Malawi Government, assurances that they will not be liable if harm is caused to Malawians.

“A Government that is accountable to its citizens cannot forego the rights of its citizens without fully informing its citizens of the implications of the indemnity, and without seeking informed acceptance by the citizens,” reads part of the statement.

The DPP has admitted that vaccines have proven to be an efficient way of addressing diseases but the party has also claimed that some vaccines have caused irreparable harm to humans.

According to the DPP, Malawi must be guided by scientific evidence of the vaccines’ safety. The party has argued that if the first step the manufacturers are demanding is an indemnity, then Malawi must question their confidence in their vaccine.

“We therefore demand that the Government must come clean on this matter. What do our scientists know about the vaccine? What assurances have we received that the vaccine is safe? What is the indemnity protecting the manufacturers from?” reads the statement in part.

The DPP has since demanded the Government to provide a satisfactory explanation to Malawians within the next 7 days failing which the opposition party will seek the intervention of the courts to “protect the lives and health of citizens.”

Malawi is yet to get the vaccine but this week lessons were disrupted in some schools due to fake news that health workers were going to administer Coronavirus vaccine to learners.

  1. Uchitsilu!
DPP needs to show if any or all of the vaccines currently being administered in the country don’t have the same liability protection. I bet you BJ can’t produce that document! The government should just release all the liability agreements for all medication!

You are all busy selling Viagra, Xanax, and other dangerous drugs over the counter when the manufacturer and the countries of origin don’t even touch those meds unless you have a prescription, yet you are the ones to speak on dangers of a vaccine to a global pandemic.

Which model is DPP following anyway? US EU or Beijing?

Opposition simasewelatu. you can’t afford to be lazy and not do your homework. Busy kujiya pa social media.

  2. Zooona boma lisangowatengera anthu m’ botolo. Ngati kuli ma Scientist/ biomedical/ vaccinologist anyenera kuti awaunikenso makhwalawo pawokha. Akuyenera kuwauza anthu ma side effects vaccine yo. Pakuti ngakhale panadol ili ndi side effects. Asanapereke kwa anthu osangodalira kuti ku Poti ku UK/ USA akulandira nafe basi osafufuza bwino bwino. Koma funso ndilokuti aliko akatakawala amenewa ku Malawiko? Kapena zoyeserazo alinazo. Tidziwa bwanji kuti tikulandiladi vaccine imene akulandira ku Uk?

  3. Seeking Court’s intervention alone is not enough but calling for demonstration. This is a national issue it’s dpp issue alone. Everyone is affected regardless of the party, region or religion someone belongs to.

  4. Keep it up intelligent and educated people of the mighty DPP. Protect Malawi from these clueless guys.

  5. In the whole article you don’t mention the brand name or manufacturer of the vaccine the govt is procuring, if you provide that information people can research online and check reviews on their own without waiting for government spokesperson or opposition spokesperson to speculate things.

  6. Very sad all the people seems to believe the social media fauce news if the white people wanted to killed the black people they could done long time because the country like Malawi they dontanufacture anything they procure even asimple asprin but u still accepting to take flu vaccine polio vaccine and other medicine even some food coming from Europe and America just wait if the government will manage to buy or not covid is here to stay

  7. Giving indemnity to drug manufacturers
Is not only naive but stupidity at best. You will be giving the drug providers licence to kill your own citizens as they will be used as Guinea pigs. Are you damn?

  8. Malawi has simply to wait if this is the case. Companies world over are asking for this indemnity because the vaccines have been approved as an emergency remedy. There are still other things not known about the crisis and about the vaccine. All who want to try them can go ahead at their own risk because research is ongoing. If not, just wait; be ready for anything paja wamantha anafera kuuna. This vaccine has met political fronts world over.
Or the government could take a census of those wishing to have it anyway and order for only those people. That way it will not be mandatory as the DPP wants us to believe it is from the original letter. Stopping it completely would not be good for those willing to try it and save their lives.

  9. Indeed there should be transparency in origins of the vaccine. The opposition must be given the information they need so that they can give alternatives. This is a national disaster and shouldn’t wait until the next government.
It raises lots of flags if the manufacturer is demanding indemnity. The opposite should be true.
Somehow I feel the authenticity of the article questionable.

    1. so you think your stupid government can be always right in decision making? Poor minded person.

  10. Palibepo nkhani apa? Ufiti eti. The vaccine is not compulsory. For once let’s be responsible when commenting about covid issues.

    1. yes the vaccine is not compulsory and that is great, however the government should ensure every Malawian knows the truth ( so far) about the vaccine so that we make informed decisions

  11. The fact is that we dont want the Vaccine.

Why is the manufacturer first demanding an indemnity instead of giving us guarantee of the vaccine? this simply tells us they want to full us.

    Africans lets wake up!!!!

    1. Vaccine manufactures do that to every country to avoid lawsuits that may come as a result of mishandling of vaccines . And dont say WE don’t want it speak for yourself its not composury. U dont sound like a very bright individual

  12. Do your own research: those vaccines currently put into the arms of British people are more than 90% effective against Covid19. The Chinese one is less than 51% effective only in mild cases. The European vaccines don’t contain pork or beef so their Muslims, Hindus are taking them…and anyway, why would Westerners want to harm Africans? Europe pours billions into Africa, including through charities like Oxfam (from which the DPP govt stole) so why would they turn around and start harming us? Get real! As soon as I’m offered a vaccine, I’ll be taking it to escape something much worse currently killing 1200+ daily in the UK.

    1. Ngalamadzzi. Our safety shd not be compromised by aid we get. We r a sovereigh state and we shd protext our pple. Plse b advised that behind the aid there r other arterial motives. Further therr is a continued policy from western nations to ensure conflict, desease amd poverty prevail across africa such that we remain dependant. So dont be cheated by aid though africa has all the resources driving their economies.

  13. Really, DPP? Where is the moral ground? Koma zinthu zimasinthadi. You get the 80% money in allowances, you leave your shit behind, stand on the fence and start showing that you care for Malawians. Really DPP? Please, tell us something else. Malawians are waiting for an apology for the way you handled the covid 19 pandemic. The arogance will not help DPP.

  14. There is no point gettin a vaccine for Covid and becoming impotent, when you might not get the disease at all or even get sick from it. Some peoples immune fight Covid, they don’t need vaccine. Why risk a vaccine that’s guaranteed impotence. Kujandula

    1. Talking like an ignoramus! How many vaccines do we get from the west? These kind of threats against vaccines dates back to early civilians. People have been spreading false news against vaccines yet we have been protected by the same. Polio, Nthomba etc. Let’s not get carried away

  15. invest money in finding local remedies.just yesterday,my noses were congested,i ate garlic,i was ok minutes later.we have solutions right here.

  16. Mbuli za dpp musaputsitse anthu. Come with your vaccines then. You’ve had several vaccines all made by bwana nzungu. There’s nothing good and positive to show the world other than poverty, witchcraft, corruption, jolousy, fornication, begging, etc etc. You can’t even make a toothpick. What a pathetic country and continent.

    1. Just because Malawi doesn’t make her own Vaccines/”toothpicks” or because she has accepted a number of vaccines when my great grandmother was in primary school doesn’t mean that it should accept anything that is shoved down it’s throat now. Such a mindset is what will make the nation still show the world poverty, witchcraft, corruption, jealousy (that’s how it is spelt by the way) fornication, begging, etcetera etcetera. Grow a pair for crying out loud.

  17. DPP has doctors, professors and all the learned professionals. I am surprised that all these people can sit down and come up with the statement that Mpinganjira is bringing up. Is this really coming from DPP.

    1. You didn’t show why you doubt the source of the information or why you are in dismay that a group of learned individuals came with the above (I don’t know what your issue is really). Your comment is as empty as the statement it is questioning

  18. Stupid DPP za zii … Kodi ku DPP ma medcol Prof ose aja palibepo wanzeru?

Kapena NGC mwangozaza anyamata a Plumbing kkkkk

  19. If you believe in conspiracy theories and don’t trust the vaccine, just stay put. Nobody will force you to get one. As for me and my family, we shall follow the Science.

    1. Others can follow and believe in these stupid idiots and fake prophets.
Mind you, they’ve had vaccines in the past made by the same Europeans and Americans, I.e polio etc.
Looking forward to getting mine too.

      1. Thanks for minding us but I don’t see why vaccines that the past generation took should affect the decisions of today. If something is going to be administered to you, you have every ounce of right to know as much as you can about it. But you wouldn’t understand peanut brain, would you?

  20. Can we talk about the 80% covid19 funds that DPP shared among themselves in form of allowances…..

If lomwes don’t want to receive the vaccine, that would be great, nobody will be forced to receive the jab.
So stop politicising the vaccine issue…..just pay back the covid19 funds that you stole…

  21. Mr roadblock with his lies. if you.fall sick today will you resist.an vaccine? don’t mislead people for political gains. the whole world is looking for vaccine.so long it is certified safe there is nothing wrong with it. people are taking ARVs which have deformed them but because the
y prolong life they still take them.

  22. If this is true, our government is full of dunderheads and the leadership is not considering the lives of Malawians at heart. Its important to note that these vaccines have so many questions unanswered. How can the Tonse Alliance govt enter into such a dangerous and precarious agreement which exposes its citizens to a high risk of their lives , deaths or body paralysis etc. Take care Tonse Alliance!! The document has be made available to the public, its a must as DPP is saying.

  23. I dont want to hear anything that is mentioning DPP koma apa pokha tichedwepo I think DPP guys have got a point & if it is a strategy to score points apa they have already bagged them. Let’s not act out of desperation or with emotions we must sober up before this is administerd on our people.

  24. Ifenso atiuze kaye kuti vaccine yolanda Akazi a eni anayitenga kuti? Munthu oyipa and wants to look an angel today. Mr losa kuwasokonezera banja.

  25. Brown Mpinganjira, stop being silly. Which vaccine is not good for Africans? Let the govt protect the citizens than brainwashing them with your conspiracy theories. All the vaccines we have no Malawian were involved in their trials, but we can see how people have been protected from measles, chicken pox and many more. The problem is that we cannot managed to run our own RCT , we have no capacity. Ethical issues are taken serious when doing RCT in research. You need to understand research design, , and no death has been reported in all the trials done for COVID vaccine. Ignorance is killing our nation, this is not politics. Which review or meta analysis you have read that point that the vaccine is not go for Africans. First , it was denial that there is no Covid in Malawi, now we are face to face with realities and we think vaccine is not good for Malawians. Stop this nonsense.

  26. This government needs to be guided in everything otherwise we can all die because of try and error type of leadership we currently have.

  27. Must disclose the exact nature and effect of the vaccine on african genes. We don’t want to get western vaccine which is in the long term will be harmful to the african gene. Government must also get the sinovac vaccine from china, it might be safe in the circumstances.

    1. When did you Africans ever come up with a vaccine? How many vaccines have you had in your lives and who made those vaccines. Kupusitsana basi.

    2. Yes its better govt administer vaccine by chinese govt other than the one from western countries. Covid started in Wuhang in china and if they have discovered vaccine that is effective then we are 100% sure of its efficiency lets use that one
