DPP MP beats up usher in Malawi Parliament

Blantyre City Central Member of Parliament (MP), Themba Mkandawire (Democratic Progressive Party—DPP) on Tuesday assaulted and injured an usher at National Assembly over 2015 calendars.

Mkandawire assaulted Jones Sabola who was distributing envelopes to MPs containing calendars.

The MP had asked for another envelope but when the staff was trying to explain to him why it’s not possible to have another envelope, the MP punched him and insulted the poor lad.

Parliamentary Sergeant at Arms, Major Samuel Mkambankhani came in to rescue the staff.

The victim, who was rushed to Parliament clinics, has been treated as outside patient but his left hand remain swollen.

Leader of the house Francis Kasaila approached Clerk of Parliament to apologise on the incident.

Speaker Richard Msowoya has said he will bring the ruling after all evidence are brought on his table.

It is said that the incident was captured by the CCTV cameras.

    Themba is MP in Blantyre City where most educated people working and holding high positions in companies are from North. This is a fact. Although BT is a Yao district there are very few who could qualify for the position. Remember that Themba is the second MP from North. the first was Kaunda.

  74. This is a criminal offence. The MP has no right assaulting the poor worker. The MP must be taken to court or the worker should institute legal actions against the MP and claim damages of K20m. The MP is not covered under immunity on cases like this…..

Had it being the Section 64 of the Constitution was around he could have been recalled by his people. Let’s rethink as a country the entry requirement for one to stand for elections of MP, MSCE of today is a very low qualification, Let’s put it at Degree or Diploma without option of English proficiency test.
