DPP official caught ‘having sex’ with married woman as Kaliati hits at ‘unromantic’ Malawi men

People of Mzuzu were reportedly treated to free drama when ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) treasurer for the Northern Region, Happy Kumwenda was caught  red-handed having sex with a married woman.

Police officers were called to the scene and the treasurer, who was previously shot,  has since been arrested.

“He was caught indulging in sex with a married womman and there was some breach of peace,” a police officer in Mzuzu told Nyasa Times. He could not be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Police said they picked him for safety.

Meanwhile, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Patricia Kaliati has made headlines for hitting  out at  Malawian men who spend time on social media instead of romancing their wives.

Kaliati said some men spend most of their time chatting on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook and working on their computers, ignoring their wives.

“You are on your WhatsApp while your wife is there beside you. Is that why you married her? Stop that and go to bed with your wive,” Kaliati is quoted saying during commemoration of International Women’s Day in Nkhata Bay.

Quoting the Holy Bible, the minister who is a church going Catholic,  said it was clear that the Scriptures did not call upon women to love their husbands, but men to love their wives and the women to be submissive.

“For some time now, we have been referring to men as children; but I think it is now time to call them soil because that is where we were made from their [men’s] ribs. Tatopa nawo akuzolowera [We have had enough of their abuse],” Kaliati is quoted saying.

  1. Sex nowadays for married people is gone, sex can be enjoyed outside marriage and especially the refugees from, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, are the ones we men enjoy because they leak us and we give them money not our wives.

  10. We have overturned what happened in the bible the woman caught committing adultery. Amene sanachimwepo agende! Momwe ndikuidziwila Malawi yathuyi tonse sitingagende. Komano kodi mkuluyi amapanga yekha chigololocho? Nanga mkaziyo ali kuti, not even mentioned anywhere in the story. Which makes me think though Mr HK was wrong, this story is politically motivated.

    The death penalty for adultery? That is insane.
    And this:
    23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.
    Also insane. And then:
    28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.
    This is “God’s law”. There is no question that such a law is appalling, because it treats women as property and forces women to marry their rapists.

  19. Madam Kaliati, your assertions are not true, if statistics was to be gathered you would find out that 95% of those who spend more time on social media – especially Whatsapp are women. They are always busy communicating with their secret lovers reflecting on being laid down on office floors or stinking resthouses.

  24. I agree with Kaliati, Malawi men and African men in general are unromantic. They leave their wives and spend time on What’s Up, internet, drinking, too much work etc. and expect the women to wait for them. Its not going to happen anymore because women have opened their eyes to the fact that their husbands are useless – so the remedy is to help themselves (as women) with men who care. In fact, the more women work and do business the more women will realise how useless their husbands are and hence seek better attention from other men including younger boys. Well, that’s what working men have always done – they have always left wives toiling at home and spent money and time on extramarital affairs. Indeed, because of this our mothers suffered and many were and have been infected and killed by selfish men. So, now its pay back time. Women also need the same enjoyment as men.

  29. Madam Kaliati, its the love for money that is breaking most marriages than what you are saying. Its not safe to marry nowadays because once you marry somebody wants to bonk your wife. Nowadays married men prefer married women because they are cheap compared to single ladies who would demand money for rent, food, clothing, electricity and water bills, airtime, medical bills, transport to and from work, fuel for their Toyota Vits or Mazda Demios etc. A married woman only demands airtime and some money to send to her parents home secretly while the rest is provided by her real husband. Very shameful act indeed but we get solace in that God The Almighty sees everything and eventually acts accordingly

  36. Why are you mixing issues? There is no link between Kumwenda’s issue and Kaliati. You should have focused on Kumwenda. For example, where was he caught? who caught him? What were circumstances?
