DPP strength in Parliament increase as 15 independent legislators join

At least 15 independent members of parliament elect have now joined the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) even before taking oath of office at parliament.

Ngalande: Won as independent after defeating Lucius Banda of UTM but will work with DPP

The 15 independent members of parliament met President Peter Mutharika on Saturday at Sanjika palace in Blantyre just a day before they are sworn in on Monday at parliament building in Lilongwe.

Pictures released by State House show Mzimba west MP Billy Kaunda, Madalitso Kazombo (formerly of MCP), McArthur Sungutsa, Tony Ngalande, Orphan Shaba and others sitting or standing with Mutharika.

State House sources say the 15 out of the 55 independent legislators will help the DPP get the position of speaker in the 193-strong House.

  2. This was not unexpected, if history is anything to go by.
And more “independents” will be joining DPP sooner than later; these people run as “independents” for various reasons, like because they could not pry the then current DPP MPs away from the ticket.
So, DPP will actually have a wide majority, to the chagrin of oChakwera and co.

  3. Tony Ngalande wakuba uyu sangalephele kupita ku Dpp kuti akabe nawo nayenso…

  4. Its a mistake to vote for an indepenent candidate. These guys are undecided about what they are doing.

  5. Who removed a provision of independent MP’s from the Section 65? These guys are chosen by pple who dont belong all parties & why after winning the move to parties without by election why our learned lawyers why do u remain silent when garbage is being spilled in ur face, why? why? why? Aaaaaaah!

    1. By Law, an independent MP can choose to remain independent or join any party represented in Parliament or not. He is a free agent. What is prohibited is for an MP sponsored into the House by a political party to change to another represented there, that’s crossing the floor. So, don’t be gullible, try to learn the Laws of the land!

  6. I feel short-changed, I voted for an independent and now he says he will join a party which I did not support. I want my vote back.

    1. You’re contradicting yourself here or you must be notorious in character. How do you punch someone you a good person in the face? That’s why you don’t know that results with tippex were discarded by MEC, daft! Losers keep wasting time but we’re busy ruling this country and no court can stop that!

    2. Typical of Malawian politicians. All these expect to be rewarded by DPP; greedy people they dont care about their country but their pockets. What a shame. They join politics to loot, so they have rightly joined the mafia party. Cry the beloved country
