Job cuts at Castel Malawi: Brewer retrenches 300 workers

Castel Malawi says it set to retrench 300 workers because of harsh economic climate in the country.

Mbilizi: Losses

Senior brands manager for Castel Malawi Titha Mbilizi said the company has been posting losses in the past 10 years.

“We can no longer avoid the retrenchments because of the volatile economic climate. We continue posting the losses,” said Mbilizi.

Castel Malawi are brewers of the most favourite beer in Malawi, Carlsberg as well as non-alcoholic drinks such as sobo.

Mbilizi said priority for retrenchment would go to those with a record of poor performance, those with disciplinary records, those who were about to retire and those whose positions were no longer relevant to the company.

Mbilizi said those retrenched will get a full retrenchment package which include severance allowance.

  1. As a Nation we lost control of this Company when it was sold to the French Entrprise.. we are doomed!

  2. If you hardly cut short your finger nails, how can you maximize company’s profits?

  3. This is just the beginning. Should we perhaps start pointing fingers? Maybe. Maybe not. It could be two early or too late.

But we all know that: Political climate = Economic climate. The two have a symbiotic relationship (though the latter solely depends on the former). Could Castell have been waiting in the wings and watching? That much we will not know – “harsh economic climate” does not leave much room for explanation. Though it does raise a question: why now if losses having piling for the past 10 years (all inclusive)?

Sad news for our country already over-burdened by huge socio-economic issues. That is on average 600 lives affected (assuming the people retrenched are married and do not have kids, which is very unlikely).

Let us hope the people in power will create jobs (as they promised)! Ooops, my bad. I forgot that: 1. Politicians lie. 2. No government world over creates jobs – but government is meant to create conducive environments for investment resulting in job creation. This is a fact that our politicians ‘deliberately ignore to clarify’.

  4. Very bad. 300 people at once? Akanawina SKC akanawalemba ntchito paja anali molemba 1Million.

  5. Am a Law abiding Citizen,I pay my Taxes.l use MRA devices like Point of Sale in my businesses …Why is then MRA forcing me to Use their Thermal Rolls which are 5 times more expensive than ordinary ones I can get in Any stationery Shop? Pakatipa munati zii chifukwa cha Campaign koma mwayambiranso …Ma Receipt azichita kukhala more Expensive than Katundu yemwe ndikugukisa. After that Muzitiberanso misonkhoyo…Ndie ndikatseka business you are going to Employ all my workers….

    1. so they can fund the Devils’ Progressive Party that simple. u better find ways of smartly evading tax its every man for himself now till 2024.

  6. Mwangobapo apa. Every company, organisation etc is involved in kuba and katangale. For example, you ask someone , a builder to construct a house for you, he steals half the materials and builds his own house! All the while they are claiming to be God fearing people. In Malawi, christianity is just a mask to cover up their sins.Oh yes,You know who you are. Everyone involved in corruption will one day get their just deserts.
