DPP-UDF alliance collect nomination forms for presidency: Mutharika torchbearer

The governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its electoral alliance partner United Democratic Front (UDF) have so far collected nomination forms to contest for presidency in the  fresh presidential elections in which incumbent President Peter Mutharika will be the torchbearer.

President Peter Mutharika: Ready, steady, candidate for fresh elections

DPP secretary general Grezedeler Jeffrey said the party is party is currently fulfilling requirements in filling in the form.

“We are ready for the fresh elections and President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will win again,” she declared. “We will go flat out to secure another victory.”

UDF spokesperson said  the party members will contribute to fulfilling the requirement in the presidential nomination form because the alliance torchbearer is President Mutharika.

“The UDF and DPP alliance is rallying behind the torchbearer President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika,” Ndanga said.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM Party who are also in an electoral alliance have not yet collected their nomination papers.

Others who have collected nomination papers include New Republican Party, New Vision for Democracy,  Mbakuwaku Movement for Democracy (MMD), independent candidates David Chikomeni Chirwa, Smart Swira, Henry Mbebwe and Phunziro Mvula.

Submission of the nomination papers will be done from   April 23 and 24  2020 to the Malawi Electoral Commission at the Chichiri International Conference Centre in Blantyre.

MEC  spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the electoral body will not extend the period of collecting nomination papers since “political parties and interested individuals have ample time to collect the forms and get signatories from all the district councils”.

“Our appeal is to everyone who is interested to collect the nominations papers that the process of filling and meeting the requirements is an elaborate one and requires time because we will need 10 signatures from all the districts including Likoma,” he said.

Mwafulirwa also said the commisison will not accept nomination papers that do not have the required signatures and proof of nomination fee attached.
