Dr Ben Phiri attains doctorate degree: Chakuamba awarded PhD

President Peter Mutharika’s special aide and ruling DPP field marshal director, Ben Phiri has attained a doctorate degree with the Cyprus International Institute of Texas in United States of America which he received at a colourful commencement ceremony held on Saturday at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

Now to be called Dr Ben Phiri, the President’s aide attained the Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Management.

His thesis was titled; “Law Enforcement and Servant Leadership; Exploring Its Functionality. A Case Study of Organizational Leadership”

Other notable graduands during the same ceremony were former cabinet minister Halima Daud, Rev. Fletcher Zioya, Bishop Patricia Pindeni, MEC Commissioner Rev.  Emmanuel Chimkwita Phiri, musician Wambali Mkandawire and nationalist Rose Chibambo.

Conferred with an honorary PhD at the same ceremony were long-time politician, Gwanda Chakuamba who has impacted lives through his political leadership as cabinet minister and parliamentarian for much of his adult life,.

There was also an honourarly doctorate for musician  Ethel Kamwendo-Banda.

The university – which is based in Texas, USA -also awarded various Diplomas, Bachelors, Masters, PhD and Professorships in Accounting, Theology, Business Administration, Political Science, Pure Sciences, Philosophy and Humanities among other disciplines.

  6. It surprises me when i see some people on this forum who do not see anomaly with the qualification of the SO CALLED Dr. BEN PHIRI. Firstly, a University without a website. Secondly, a University following people and awarding them degrees in their country, Thirdly, it seems that others are being used on this forum to support Ben Phiri’s fake qualification and title. Fortunately, and thankfully, i can not be used in such battles. No one can use a man like me, Thom Paul Duncan Nkalodzwa, B.Sc., D.C.M. Please open your eyes and wake up. When his critics were attacking him he took them by surprise when he resigned from his position. Now he has also surprised them by attaining a PhD nobody saw this coming. Here is a country, struggling and failing to improve BASIC, I mean BASIC (PRIMARY) education; and at the same time it is busy romantisizing FAKE, WORTHLESS diplomas, degrees etc from a dubious USA University. What message are we sending to the youth who want to attain high quality education?
    This is like quota system which is essentially a weird system that subsidises (and by implication, encourages) laziness and punishes hardwork. And strangely, we believe that we can improve the quality of education in this country!

    Give compliments where it is due, Ben has done a good thing academically. Mind you, he is not begging anyone to call him Dr. For someone who has attained that status after a hectic academic hassle, he is more interested in passing on the knowledge than kulimbana ndi anthu osamufunira zabwino.

  41. Studying and attaining a PhD is more of the process not the institution. Fellow Malawians, especially those accusing Dr Phiri here, understand that when one studies for a PhD he is more or less under his own tutelage in pursuit of academic excellence.

    The thesis presented by Dr Ben is probably the first ever and will be used by this and many generations ahead to change and improve how our society works in line with his thesis.

    If you are an academic here you will agree that any doctoral thesis carries with it a new construct that can be used for reference by many students and stakeholders.

    I have seen the thesis myself and it carries with it powerful references and citing from some of the world’s prominent writers, academics and leaders. The citing is also well presented as it follows the Harvard model which is an internationally recognised presentation of a thesis.

    Universities here in Malawi and world over can use this doctoral paper to enhance more research and build new theories around it. That is what academic excellence means.

  47. Sometimes Malawians are a funny lot. Why are you busy accusing Dr Ben Phiri when you already see that he has taken a step ahead than you? Why are we so obsessed with accreditation? In the US accreditation varies and for your information many many credible institutions are not accredited simply because some of them deny to include immoral stuff as part of their syllabii. Most Christian-oriented institutions fail to acquire accreditation because they cannot allow let’s say gays or lesbians, or teach strange theories. Ben has been humble and not preaching to everyone that he is reading and researching for a PhD all the past years. Coming all the way from Europe to give you a PhD at your house? Unheard of. This degree can’t land you in any meaningful employment at all. You have fooled yourself. A Ph.D should be a source of pride even after the graduation is over. In this case, I doubt whether this one will. May be, it may amongst foolish Malawians. Take. that qualification and put it in a serious academic environment and see what it can offer you. I ask you to publish your thesis in a peer reviewed journal and see whether it can be publishable? Even in the local press, I doubt whether it can be publishable.May be you can publish with Likuni Press or Malamulo Publishing House or Montfort etc. Secondly this university is not recognized.   78. I Googled universities by the given name as well as the professor quoted. I am finding one Cypress International Bible Institute based in Texas USA that offers bible related qualifications by distance education and provides a list of courses and fees including about $1800 for a PhD and $500 for an honorary doctorate degree. One of the links is http://www.cypressbiblecollege.org. Just wondering if these degrees are linked to this institution. People might want to check it out.

  80. Cyprus International University is a briefcase university. It has no campus and doctorates are sold for $2000 each. Very cheap. Get yours now. Primary School Certificate is the minimum requirement.
