Dzuka Malawi: K27m salary, 2500 litres of fuel and Dr. Laz
In Malawi last Friday, 18th December, someone might have pocketed K27 million as his monthly salary for being a Governor of the Reserve Bank. I hear the new Governor has cut it to K12 million whilst his Directors who receive this fifth poorest economy on the planet get K20 million and they are refusing to go down.
I do not know whether this is propaganda or not. But I am not shocked entirely, that Malawi public funds finances opulence and stinking grandiose. That the Governor after syphoning K27 million a month which is higher that Chairman of the largest economy USA or European country Ireland, they get two official cars- which they will buy for a song, they get free house, school fees, cooks, security, gym and golf membership.
If you add at least 10 directors at the same level across such institutions, the taxpayer haemorrhages billions of kwachas on a cartel which drafts own contracts and gives themselves hefty packages.
Then move to parastatals of ailing state companies- they are all entitled to a Toyota VX and will without shame buy a new one as “entitlement” even when the corporation is failing to provide services.
If you think I am joking, look at ESCOM buying 50 new cars amid blackouts and hiring personal cars to the corporation continuously some for five years. Look at EGENCO constructing K250 million managers house with all bedrooms ensuite when their services are simply satanic.
Go to Malawi Housing, Southern Region Water Board, Blantyre Water Board, TEVETA and even National Loans Board- students begging to finance their education whilst CEO finds it prudent to get a VX for K100 million.
Before we roast parastatal, maniacs let us look at the Office of the President and Cabinet. Secretary to the President and Cabinet gets a whooping 2500 litres a month. Him and his colleagues called Principal Secretaries get new cars which they will buy after five years. Yes you guessed right all those at warehouse will go away with almost brand new cars for a song.
If Dr Lazarus Chakwera and Dr. Saulosi Chilima’s are serious about transparency, he should publish all salaries and benefits of everyone who receives from public finances or government affiliated agencies. The public should understand the unequal society these goons have created.
A driver or clerk in an institution gets K100,000 per month. The PS gets a free car and heft allowances. Many abuse pool cars for errands which is double billing the taxpayer. Juniors are powerless to stop such abuse. If President John Magufuli did it, Dr Laz and Dr Chilima and the Tonse Administration can.
I mean, look here, offer the best market rates for an economy like Malawi, wosafuna achoke. Stop the ridiculous car scheme which means Government buying new cars for people already heavily renumerated. Stop fuel allocations, fuel should be used and requested and maximum to one full tank a week if operating at base and only draw more when travelling outside base.
It is possible to change everything in the next new year only if the President and his deputy are willing to side with Malawians. Look here Thomas Sankara, for four years between 1983 and 1987 as a ruler of Burkina Faso did built 350 schools, rail, and roads without foreign aid.
He increased literacy, banned forced marriages, vaccinated 2.5 million kids, and planted over 10 million trees.
How did he do it- cut off stupid salaries like K27 million or K12 million from public taxes, sold all expensive cars and made Renault (the cheapest car then) in Malawi let them use the lower versions of Toyotas.
Dr. Chakwera won’t be remembered of his beautiful speeches, but how much he did to change Malawi. So far things are going south, everyday you hear a Government department refuting something or explaining something, it shows things are going haywire.
I know the President believes in consultations like the need for all church elders to meet to discuss whether I had sex with a woman outside my matrimonial home. Presidency is quite different, the bucks stops with the President, it will be his name, nobody’s else. Nobody remembers Kamuzu. Bakili, Bingu, JB or Peter Mutharika’s Ministers. We remember the President.
Dzukani Excellency, publish all obsence salaries and benefits, cut them publicly, put an end to the stupid TX vehicle scheme, fire or suspended everyone under investigations and reduce number of Ministers to 20. We all agree to many excesses, but the first should be CEOs and PS’s who are sharing billions in the name of entitlement. While at it, tell Members of Parliament to take 10% for this year while we are sorting out the economy. For the economy to pick up, start with cutting perks of all senior officials by 50% and government fleet by 60%, you be amazed how much we will save.

Theft by public servants.
We Malawians and all Tax Payers are paying these people these astronomical salaries allowances and perks. If we pay them then we are their bosses. Now where and when does a Boss not know how much his employee is getting? Ridiculous!!! No wonder there are so many committees, workshops, seminars, repetitive meetings without solutions or resolutions in this country. It’s all about allowances. You find meetings changing venues all over the country just for them to earn more allowances.
Please Malawians let’s sort out our Country.
When I went to school in those days we had Civics as a subject. We knew even the Presidents Salary.
I now see why it was removed.
Sipoko you are a good man. Osayikira a thy kumbuyo
Very touching story I thought Chakwera met Tz president if he is intelligent enough he would have copy paste almost all important policy and apply here immediately but mmmmmm I guess background advisers are pipo with envil minds. Let’s wait ………..
Munali m’boma mpaka six month ago; mwadyaidya ma rate omwewo. Pano poti mwatuluka ndiye mwati mukwere pachulu kuloza chala anzanu? It is true that it is bad, but why did you not realize that it was bad when you were busy stealing from Malawians? Zaipa lero chifukwa sindinu mukudya?
However on another note, this is daylight robbery. Mbava iyi yawulula ndipo it is true let us change this. Go to the village and look at the type of roads your folks are using, the schools your cousins are studying in, the healthy centres they get help from, the type of houses they are sleeping in (ambiri za madothi ndi udzu mpaka lero). It’s pathetic out there. Once you see it with a human eye and heart, you will know how scandalous your pecks are.
it’s not a question of what the previous administrations tolerated in the public sector. Those administrations are now part of history. The present government promised to bring in new ways of governing and being accountable to the electorate. This is what they need to do so that people should see the seriousness of government’s intentions. Now is the time for people to see and appreciate the “fruits” of the so called “promised land”.
SO THE MUTHALIKA AND MULUZI FAMILIES TOLERATED THIS NO SENSE SINCE 1994??????
Yes they did.And so is the current administration
Chakwera is surely a very arrogant person. How come he is calling Government Officials who assumed Office before he became president as “rubble”? If Chakwera does not withdraw this arrogant word “rubble” on Civil Servants, the same shall haunt him come 2025. Of all the suffering which Civil Servants endure and you call them rubble? Ayi zabwino zonse Mr President.
Kumachimvetsa chingerezi bwinobwinotu eti? Rubble, zinthu zophwanyika zimene zaunjikika pa malo. Corruption is a rubble, nepotism is a rubble, arrogance is a rubble, killing people with albinism is a rubble, attacking people with petrol bombs is a rubble, stealing government property is a rubble, sending young people to beat up people in the streets is a rubble, politicizing the police is a rubble, failing to respect the rule of law is a rubble, etc. It is not about people. I hope sukulu yathekapo apa.
Malawi is a sick nation. We need a complete structural overhaul. Our fingers point to the State President, yes; and rightly so because he is the captain of this sinking ship called Malawi. But remember, we are living in a democratic society, or country; where human rights without responsibility are taking centre stage. Where in the world do you criticize the government to be slow in sacking all employees that we are calling ‘njoka’; while at the same time we are calling upon the same government to be slow in extraditing a citizen? Where in the world do we call on government to ensure that farmers are not spending nights at AIP selling points; while ignoring the unnecessary ques in banks? I visited the Road Traffic Department one of these days to renew my drivers licence, it took me a whole two days. I had to go to the bank a whole six times to deposit a 10,000, then a 5,000, then a 10,000, then another 5, 000 then a 10, 000 and then a 20, 000 kwacha. At one point, in the banking hall, we were told network ya Road Traffic yagwa; only to start working again after the bank teller had finished helping some two customers with huge sums of cash. The normal banking ques were too long, and chances of going back home without being attended to are very high. Think of long ques on ATMs. And the list goes on and on. This nation has too many challenges that need to be sorted out. Unfortunately, others need some changes in our laws, and no one can just wake up and dictate any change. Interestingly, some legal provisions, if quickly changed, can be challenged in our courts; and chances of complainants winning the show are very high. Yet we need quick change! I do not know, but as a nation; we seriously need to change, not only our mindset; but also our ‘being’ Malawians. I totally agree with the author of the article, and I hope those that have been assigned to lead us will objectively consider the issues at hand; and the many more that are there. My humble plea to our irrational analysts or activists, or whatever we call them; please, before making empty noises, learn to do qualitative researches and then act.
The Mob – is fast, less painful to tax payers.
Love is corrective. Wakutsina khutu ndi mnansi. May the president and his vice take note of this and take appropriate actions. You are the right people who can do the right things. If the rumours are true, please act as soon and deligently as you can. Don’t hate these comments but be guided by them. Always remember to ask God for wisdom.
We are led by crooks.
Crying for my beloved country
Shame on Tonse government.
Chilima must abandon this marriage.
Y my Malawi paying huge amount of money to one person while Juniors are crying for promotion kkkkk dzuka Malawi indeed
When I discovered that Rudo is a DPP supporter, I lost all the trust I had in her articles; even this one, leaves a lot to be desired. Where on Earth can we have all employees’ salaries publicly declared? What could be the aim of doing that? Admonishing them for accepting higher salaries? It doesn’t make sense at all. She also advocates for salary cuts by 50%; this is a joke of the century. Which CEO can accept to receive meagre salary when their counterparts elsewhere enjoy a lot of privileges? The Malawi Government also needs competent staff; so, it has to meet what the market is offering in order to retain the best employees. Now, coming to your DPP Rudo, did you write anything when the APM Government insisted on buying the Lexus cars despite people speaking against it? The salaries which you are condemning now as being very high, have they been raised within the six months in which LMC has become State President? Why didn’t you ask APM to do that senseless exercise of reducing the salaries? All you want is that there should be chaos and people should cherish APM. No! There are a lot of things why people needed this change. So, Rudo, find better things to write; spare us from such senseless articles. We have a lot of things to do to build this nation.
Chakwera and Chilima are fast falling into the same corruption trap that caught APM
Everybody remebers Thomas Sankara, a true African hero! But who will remember Bakili, Bingu, Joyce, Peter or Laz after 30 years? Consider Mr President, the one before you failed us and our Nation!
It needs special efforts and leaders who make a different to build up a legacy!
Kudya katatu kwatikanika. Passport ya 14000 yatikanika. Felteleza otchipa wativuta. Kuthana ndi katangale kwativuta .a president kuyenda yenda nkumapeza ma allowance kwawathekera. Ma MP double salary zawathekera. Osauka zawasokonekera
Chilungamo cheni cheni
Zoona zake nzakuti Chakwera wasokoneza kale u president wake.
1. Too many relations surround him n influence him. He has lost the national touch he talked about n remains more of a family granny to his relations n friends.
2. Chakwera has no clear vision n strategy to achieving that. He talks but no idea of how to deliver that with speed n efficiency.
3. Chakwera can not take a hard decision let alone discipline those surrounding him but messing up. He has info..but chose to ignore. Xroads gate is no issue to Chakwera.
5. Chakwera will be a one term president coz I for one and many patriots in Malawi have seen how empty in action he is.
Chakwera u had chance to change Malawi, but ua messing up n losing that chance on each passing day.
U cud become Magufuli of ur own, but ua becoming the direct contrast to these two Lions; Kagame n Magufuli.
U’l b remembered for being such a clueless president in Malawi
The guy is just too empty, very clueless president, he has not even set any standard for the presidency, am not surprised being a pastor for 28 yes means the guy was just useless human being
Kkkkkk Zimatero zinthu ukatengera mwamphamvu
Where is Mtambo?
Laz..SKC..stop this looting!!!!
It’s good that finally your eyes are open….In under a year Laz and Saul must start cutting salaries of people ,I wonder why you didn’t touch on benefits in the Judiciary, Military etc …People must get realistic benefits …How did we get here? Laz and Saul are supposed to be our Miracle Workers ? Your UDF and DPP failed Miserably and You Start Creating unrealistic Expectations….
So u want chakwera to go same route like UDF and DPP
Inu tazitayeni zandale zanu zo muku bakila chani apa Mxiiii
He does not have the Balls! Scratch my back and I will scratch yours is what works for Dr Laz. Only Bingu had the balls to tell the UDF masquarades at the time to fuck off! And he did things for all of us! If it weren’t for the mistake of failing to float the currency. He would have left this country in a better footing.
Webster was a Beneficiary of the chronological order!
.
Simply, it was easy for someone to make a positive impact from a self piloted project!! Thom was never a genius!
Did Bingu do what you are alleging for public good or for himself? Have you forgotten the hundreds of billions of dollars he amassed for himself? The best we can do is not to uplift those who already mismanaged our economy, rather, to point out at the wrongs and lobby for better governance. Understanding the article in context, the author is shading some light as to what used to happen, and is continuing to happen; and an appeal to the current government to avoid making the same mistakes and relook the employment contracts and conditions of service … the so-called privileges for holding particular offices.
Well said. The ball is in his court now.
Take it or leave it.
these excesses have always been there and if should have been protested every day for atleast the past two and a half decades. Unfortunately nobody really cares about this country and we will remain impoverished for eternity
I don’t know if the 27 million kwacha salary is true, but I know that these people at the head of the pyramid in our institutions and government are receiving much more than necessary. Can the president or advisors change this? No! They are part of the system. This is what they campaigned for. Power and money.
Very true Ngoni, this is what they campaigned for mapovipozi, phwando la akakowa, kuomola, kupakula and the list is endless. Edmond Burke said “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” end quote. If we can’t rise now these will continue mpaka Yesu adzabwera. This politicians knows what happens and they campaigns for that, let’s make them finds something to campaign for not these fat pay and allowances at expenses of poor Malawian. MALAWI DZUKA RISE AND FIGHT AGAINST IMPUNITY
When I read about these stories about my country I shade tears. How on earth can some one earn so much? How can we develop if we continue to talk and no action. Six months in this administration has more excuses than I can share here. You see folks, it is easier said than done. Fish rots from the head. If the president was serious enough surely he could have demonstrated his zeal by surrounding himself with intelligent people. For starters Dr Chakwera has more advisers than any head of state that I know. Many people screamed for a forensic audit in our institutions something every new administration MUST do and yet it is just recent that this administration is conducting them. What took you so long? what excuses can you give Malawians for your incompetence? Requests for forensic audits was free advice from people who know about how govts are run and yet you chose to ignore them simply because they were not white advisers?. Not all that glitters is gold Mr president. Malawi will be on fire and you will have no one to blame but yourself. You can not clear the so called rubble wearing kids gloves. DPP is a system. A system which requires smarts and deep shovels coz you have to dig deep before you can get to the roots of the corruption vice.
Muwalo nqumayo, Don’t believe everything you read here, in Malawi there are alot of fake news going around the whole country. This story is one of the fake news. All of these fake stories are there just to tarnish the credibility of our President.
🤣🤣ma salary awo ndi ma benefits awo mwa dziwa bwanji? Pakena munali wa m’modzi mwa iwo? 🤣🤣🤣🇲🇼🇲🇼🇲🇼
Kukanika kuganiza sitionetsela kuguku! Anthuwa ndimayesa amachita kulupilidwa ndi anyamata a accounts? Ndiye amenewo sabgadziwe zimene anyani amenewa akutenga? Awansoooooooo!
You have too much faith in Chakwera, it shall end in tears
That’s the system used to syphon money from government coffers, even if you can analyse the directors it’s a cartel of party follower. They even know whose gona be the next director
Thats a pity to a poor Malawi who depends on Aid donations & misuse the funds. Always u hear the 5th poorest nation in the world Malawi.
Its a disgrace actually. Cut the salaries & the benefits. Thats a social cost to the Nation & a single benefit to the individuals.
I think ntchito ya president ndiyovuta. Labour law salola kutsitsa salary
#Structural violence
Who are you advising really? Not this dunderhead of a president. Musiyeni ankowona ngati zophweka mkulanda Boma mothandizidwa ndi Hi5 Judges
Nyekhwe, analanda boma ndi mbava za nuzo
So the Other Dunderheads before him let all this Happen and You expect this Dunderhead to Clear your mess …You must be a dunderhead too…
Very true Rudo! And the masses continue to be at the mercy of these gluttons!
can you please confirm that salary. It makes it more of a speculation. Nyasatimes learn to investigate and give solid facts. If it’s true it’s a shame
Stupid! You think it just came from his or her head, foolish iweyo. I have been in such organisations, this is very true.
Learn to argue your point politely…your point was deflated by the insults…so unnecessary..
Twice I have asked my child what he wants to be when he grow up and he has said he wants to be a teacher. Looking at the salaries above, I will advise him to be president’s friend. That’s the way to go.
These salaries are paid to high performers in some countries but in Malawi even if you are doing nothing, you still get the money.
Well articulated article. This is the truth and I hope Brian Banda and the rest of the spin doctors are reading this at the state house. We had great hopes when Dr Laz came to power but Alas! power corrupts. He has now mastered the game of building his empire of devil. Malawians do not matter nor does he care what his critics tells him. He is hell bent to listen to imperialists like Tony Blair and his hench men who will soon start demanding hefty allowances from his office even though we are being told that he is being given free advice. To that I say Bullshit!! no such a thing as free lunch. These people are all the same they come into office pretending to want to change the system and yet they refuse to tighten their own belts. Look at the advisers the president has. He needs to learn from what other institutions do. The prime minister of Great Britain has 6 advisors for crying out loud! This government is a joke. I do not even think Dr Laz fits the title of a listening president may be to his advisors and his listening is certainly not from the masses. I would not be surprised if he will be a one term president if he continues in this path. What Malawi needs is a Mwangufuli who cares about his people not Chakwera who is so keen on impressing his imperialist slave masters and friends.
Clearly there is a minimum level of depth required to run a country. An understanding of the bigger picture balanced with the diligence of a ‘watch repairer’. Sadly although our HE speaks very well, I doubt very much there’s enough vision of where we are headed nor is there any diligence in any single path to changing course. We were told 100 days are too few to do anything, while I disagreed (bcoz many have done a lot in those days including abiti) I allowed another 100days, but alas things seem to get worse. So bcoz am a loyal Tonse follower, I have decided to loan the presidency another 100days and hope to see some real direction and action. Let’s sort the rot in key MDAs asap, let’s iron out the input subsidy programme once and for all, there are many capable Malawians who can step in for few weeks to sort the mess, lets agree performance metrics of ministers publicly, deliver the promise on water/Escom/passport fees, sort the diplomatic missions ASAP-professionalize diplomacy this is where your agenda is propagated, jobs-give Malawians a pathway to how we will track jobs, cut the excess-no need to travel when you can do zoom, or better yet use lean entourage, and Less weekly speeches please. Most of these can be done in under 100days
The amaunt is very big our country is poor
I totally agree with the author. The rubble work is still a lot Mr President
The president should be radical if we want to see reall change.otherwise it will be another failed leadership with too much to talk but nothing to deliver.i dont think malawi needs this again.
Political will is lacking.without vision we will perish.
nkhakwamba musanawale kukoliyanaku ndi mfundu zo mlembi nkhani uyu watambasuwa apa, chonde a chakwera sinthani vinthu. apa vinthu veumampha chaaa. [for the first time I concur with the points raised by the writer, things ain’t fine, please Mr president take some stiff steps to change things.
pala vinthu viwenge theula, chalo chithu chingasinthapo chaa, tizungulirenge waka pamozamoza nge membe. if things will be in this way, forget about developing our country.
I agree with you on the excessive salaries, these needs to be checked, however, we can’t copy magufuli or whichever economy because we don’t know their constitution. The President cannot just wake up and start firing people. Remember we are in a democratic society and we are governed by laws. Maybe we can start by changing some of these laws that enables thieves to capitalise on. It’s not everyone under investigation that are guilty, we know some in government who were supposed to be under investigation but are not. I know someone at a water utility company who was sabotaged by his subordinate and government rewarded him yet it is in fact him who is very corrupt… Yet the system has rewarded him… We are in a time where everyone is taking a strategic place to be rewarded. Some of these people being redeployed are victims of circumstances.. There are visionary and hardworkers, we all know nthawi ya DPP people had no choice but to lie for them to get employment. The Tonse government has rewarded some people who are very corrupt. Someone at the state House a well known corrupt guy from the NGO sector, now overseeing government business, no wonder you here corrupt stories associated with him. Matemba said when you fight corruption, it fights back, true some have lost their jobs, others are under investigation because they tried to fight against mikhala kale mmakampanimo. So we have to be careful with this advocacy for change.. Let us pursue this change with wisdom, let the president take his time to implement his agenda for change which made us vote for him.
None of his so called advisors will tell him this, i dont see anyone with that calibre. If u look closely, a pulezident wa sakuziwatu izizi. paja saziwa zose, ali ndi ozawo omawauza kkkkkk
That is Thyolo boy and a total thief. All his relatives and in laws are put in better jobs both in Lilongwe and Blantyre. This is too much for one person 27million Kwacha per month? Every time goes to Blantyre for his in laws and this boy saw him whilst working together at Capital Hill. Kumayenda ndi Bible M’manja mudzafera mu umphawi koma KUBA ndalama za boma. The boy is too rich after stealing the government.Anybody who is refusing to drop down his salary should be dismissed and prior to that check his contact and what does he say. What the boy did is robbing the country and if any thing tae him to court and crab his house under construction.
Zangazanga Chikhosi will mess up the whole civil service he is promoting people willy nilly because they have connections to the ruling party .
Sadly those are tru facts… but the way some of these institutional systems are engraved into the fabric of our society, you will be made enemy number one if you dare to pull such a stunt… it will even prompt them to look into other crooked ways of siphonin public purse which would even be more detrimental.. cry our beloved country …
Very objective article. Hope Dr Laz and Chilima or their advisors are reading this and briefing their bosses. We must tie the belt from the head of state to lowest paid civil servant. Obscene salaries are killing our already drained fiscus.
Well said Rudo Tarifo although your name sounds foriegn, and u r paid by Opposition.
So if you don’t know that it might be propaganda and here you are writing the same which you don’t know, are you trying to make news out of people comments? Hey ho back and bring the right information! Kodi upusaku bwanji atolankhani wathu?
Nice article. It makes sense.
Stupid journalist!!! Government or the private sector in Malawi are not the only employers in the world. You offer people peanuts expect 2 things
1. They will steal more through procurement or
2. Migrate and work where they can be equitably remunerated.
Communism was tried, tested and it failed! Read your history young man. Ngati umphawi wa kupweteka peza zina zopanga not writing this nosense!
Can’t agree with you more. Chakwera should have stamped his authority from the word go. Should have started by selling all state houses but one. He should then have moved into all those areas mentioned, I.e exorbitant expenditures including MPs salaries and benefits. Ministers and all other areas. There’s still a lot of waste that needs clearing in Malawi. If Magufuli and Kagame did it, I believe Chakwera can do likewise.
Nothing but the truth. Executives at Escom, Engenco, etc, eish, are the worst thieves out there. Not forgetting the PSes and of course the stupidity at RBM. Its all madness.
“Some Things Will Never Change” By Late 2Pack.
We are leaving in end times, no president will change our economy. Something big is about to happen, let us prepare our lives.
The train is pulling
Excellent piece, Mr President please take this one on and your second term will be even greater.
Eish Malawi still have more problems and we don’t khow how we call it? Is it leadership or citizens themselves they don’t take action when things like these happen
Thomas sankara was a cut above the rest can’t compare him to H.E. rev Dr siku empty head
