Escom surrenders vehicles for Chimulirenji convoy: Chilima accuses DPP of abuse of public resources

Financially-troubled Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has surrendered  some of its vehicles which forms part of President Peter Mutharika running mate, Everton Chimulirenji’s convoy,  being used for elections campaign.

State vice-president Saulos Chilima disclosed this  at a UTM Party rally in Kasungu on Saturday.

Chilima has since told the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to immediately withdrew the vehicles, saying this is abuse of public resources.

“It is not the responsibility of Escom to give vehicles for convoys, no. This is pure abuse of public resources and I will not condone it,” said Chilima Chilima said he would continue spilling the beans of corruption and theft of public resources to enhance accountability and transparency.

“They say that I should give evidence, why can’t they deal with the one [Mutharika] who received K145 million and then five vehicles, what evidence do you want?” Chilima asked rhetorically.

The UTM president said Blantyre Water Board received a loan of K160 billion for some works but the board wants to award the contract to contractors with DPP connections without going through the tender system as required by law.

Chilima also said Macra has given the DPP vehicles for use during the campaign, saying he has the registration numbers and the type of vehicles which he would reveal one day.

The UTM president  also said that the DPP is getting money from Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) and Energy Generation Company (Egenco), the company established to generate power, dubiously for the funding of the ruling party.

“You should know that your time is up. The officials who are conniving with the ruling party to do this rot will be accountable for their actions,” he said.

Chilima—who stuck to his script of condemning the rot draining public resources in the DPP administration—is on record to have challenged responsible authorities to investigate officials from the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) and State Residences over their alleged roles in the award of a contract in the procurement of Escom generators to the fourth bidder instead of the successful bidder.

The Vice-President said a brave female Escom chief executive officer (Evelyn Mwapasa) was transferred to a ‘small” institution for allegedly refusing to take instructions from the officials.

Escom board chairperson Thom Mpinganjira said his board had ordered a forensic investigation into what it called blatant disregard of procurement rules and regulations.

Mpinganjira, an accomplished businessperson and majority shareholder in FDH Financial Holdings Limited, said the irregular procurement decisions have left Escom with materials that it may not use for as long as 10 years while some would, over time, become technologically obsolete.

During the Kasungu rally, Chilima  told the record crowd that DPP will be out of government come May 21 and he would form the next government

  1. Guys umbuli sichinthu chabwino Chilima ndi VP wa dziko la Malawi ndipo ayenera kulandira ma benefit onse ngati VP kusagwira ntchito sikufuna koma ngati sakupasidwa ntchitozo atani may be mubwereretso ku xool, I think MCP and DPP kunazazana mbuli zokha zokha, munthuyu ndithu ndi mudalitso ochokera kwa Mulungu. Lemekezekani Namalenga mutipasa mnyamatayu kuti atichose muwukapolo wa umbuli onse amene akumunyoza akhululukireni sakudziwa chomwe akuchita

  2. What Chilima is saying is a fallacy. Has he already forgotten, or he is not aware that he is misusing government resources in party work by taking with him the security detail on his political campaign tours, together with other amenities? In actual fact he is the one who must be questioned as to why he is not so credible and trustworthy as a presidential candidate. How will people take him seriously?

  3. I have been searching about UTM and Chilima found nothing but hatred, cruel you are there to punish others. U havr lost my vote. UDF my vote is yours. Awa alephera awa palibe chanzeru akulankhula. Talking nonsense

    1. Take your vote to whosoever you want to, we are not losing this elections because of small rather tiny minded people like you.

  4. I wish I could vote UTM into power but what bothers me is the questionable characters in the party: Masangwi, Makondi, Mbewe and the likes of these fellows.
As regards revelations on abuse of resources in government departments and statutory bodies, this has been going on for years although this DPP government leads the pack. Having been in government for a long time, SKC is better placed to glean information on abuse of resources than Laz but we should remember the latter revealed wrongdoings being committed by DPP government on procurement of standby generators, a revelation suspected to have resulted in transfer of Mwapasa to some obscure department.
The foregoing not withstanding, the coming in of JB into MCP worries most of us as her PP is no different in thieving than DPP.

  6. Ndikuvotera iweyo basi SKC WANVA Ngakhale akazianga ndi chibwezi changa ndawauza kuti vote SKC BASI

  7. I like this young man. He is really a strategist. In August he introduced himself on corruption platform with the pumbwa rhetoric. He moved on to addressing issues he will focus on when elected president – 1 million jobs, cheap fertilizer, etc. This culminated into his Manifesto. Now he has switched the gear taking the offensive approach. He is full of surprises. Not sure what he will focus on after May 10. I am sure it will be fireworks. Its no surprise people love him.

Remember, people are still waiting to hear the price of fertilizer. He started talking about it few weeks back. He did it in order to see the reaction from other opponents. Unfortunately, others did not read his intentions well. They rushed to announced the MK10,000 per bag price of the precious commodity. Be careful, this young man is calculative in reading the minds of his opponents. With akweni, Winiko and others on his side they form a formidable team.

  8. Saulos is winning these elections whether mcp likes it or not. He is the type of a leader Malawi needs now. MCP ,PP, FP has become full of people connected with lots of questionable character in as far as katangale is concerned. How will you fight corruption? MCP you can not even get information /tips on what is happening in some parastatals and you are busy blaming some one who is telling malawians on what is happening. You think a mcp muwina, forget it. Ngati pali chipani chochita practice tribalism nde ndinu a congress. Samadziwa ndani? Leave the young man alone.

  9. Mr VP, you are also using state resources for UTM campaign. Mfundo zakuthera iwe ndi comedian Manganya. Campaign youmangokhalira ndiulura.

  10. Voting for UTM is the same as voting for DPP. We need real change in Malawi and that’s only Chakwera. The MCP leader does not share the rot and not at all! We already heard Chilima saying he has a lot of support from the ruling DPP. If you vote for him be assured nothing will change. Also look closely at the UTM manifesto- it’s a rushed document, a complete example of one economist somewhere in a lodge.

  11. I wonder why Malawians should trust this young man. For the past 5 years he lived watching the parastatals supporting the DPP government but chose to say nothing. Now that he is out of DPP he can make all these allegations. What a shame! Does he think Malawians are foolish??

      1. UTM is the only party with serous leaders who loves Malawi, only by abandoning DPP, shows how serous these guys are. CHILIMA is a serious guy and 2019 21 may BOMA.

  12. This boy Chilima is total rubbish he is using public resources and yet accusing GVT mbuzi ya munthu asaaaaa

  13. This guy was given the same Escom cars when he was DPP running mate in 2014 but he saw nothing wrong with it. Zalakwika chifukwa it’s someone else. Ife sutipusitsa nawo, tichotsa nonse limodzi DPP A ndi B! Hypocrite

    1. Akulu inu amene mukudziti a “Inde tu” dzina lanu ndakumverani chisoni kwambiri ndi umbuli wanu. Monga inu simukudziwa kuti nthawi ya campaign ya 2014 boma linali m’manja mwa PP pansi pa utsogoleri wa Joyce Banda? Ndiye mukuti mu nthawi imeneyi a ESCOM amatenga magalimoto awo ndikumpatsa SKC ngati running wa Peter? Are you really serious? Ignorant people like you should not comment on Nyasatimes.

  14. You are wasting time Saulos !! Masses will not vote for you because of whistle blowing,, but economic development.

  15. All I hear is Chilima accusing DPP this and that but I don’t recall one policy that allows me to understand what UTM is all about!!! So all you are interested in is getting rid of DPP!!! Getting rid of Mutharika!! We want a president not a weinger!! what would make me vote for you??? Mr Chilima????

  16. How clean is Mpinganjira, if Escom vrhicles are put at the disposal of DPP campaign. Also investigate that through his bank is being used channelled to the consituencirs at rate of mk8.5 million per consituency. Is it a good will or money laundering. He maybe the sponsor

  17. Izi zokha a Malawi tisavomereze please. This is a form of election riging and also pure abuse of government resources. DPP is a dirty party with respect to issues of misuse and theft of government resources. It is only through the effort and voice of every Malawian of good will that this nasty practice can be stopped.

  18. Nonse mukuononga ndalama za boma. DPP using Escom resources is wrong and the non-functioning VP drawing a salary, using state security and state houses without working for it IS WRONG TOO!!

  19. Walk DPP out. Anyone is better than this. MCP, UTM anything and anyone. Enough of this blatant thugging of resources. Not only have they got government machinery and bribes from contracts, they now want to pinch from parastatals. In 5 years you were too stupid to plan for funding ma elections and you claim you have capacity to run our malawi??? GET LOST

  20. A BWANA KODI KAMPENI YANU NDIYE ITI? Complaining, complaining basi. Koma achinyamata mutichitsa manyazi zedi

  21. Let Chilima be the first to stop abusing public resources. He has cars , security when he is not doing anything in the government which is also not good. He should start first and people will take him serious. He is drawing fuel from government too. Stop and check yourself first. The bible says remove the log in your eye first then you will be able to see what is in your friend’s eye. Chilima has a log in the eye, let him demonstrate it, rather than finger pointing, yet.he cannot see wrong with what he is doing.

    1. His office is a delegated office if he is not delegated what is supposed to do? His mandate is expiring on May 21. Joyce banda was getting salary in from 2010 to April 2012 but by then she was not working because the president that time was not delegating his duties to her> Aipe SKC chifukwa akuulula zosakaza ndalama? Kodi mesa ndalama zimenezi ndi za amalawi tikuvutika ndi umphawi wazaoneni??? Kondani dziko lanu man osati kukonda chipani. Nkhani ndiyoti ndalama zikuonongeka apa
