The cause of the fire which started at around 18:30PM is yet to be established but information gathered by Nyasa Times reporter on the scene of the incident is electrical fault from students who like charging their phone batteries through boosting by connecting chargers direct to the socket whose wires are very loose.

Others suspected that the fire started from the main Escom pole which connects and supplies its power line to the hostels.

According to the students they have been noticing some sparks coming from the pole for a long time and they have been reporting to the school’s management but no action was taking place.

Nyasa Times understand that the students learnt about the fire while they were studying.

A form 3  student Chifuniro Ngayiyaye who was in tears and he comes from Mangochi district told Nyasa Times that the fire has burnt his K20 000 pocket money, school fees, clothes, books, suitcase  and blanket.

“Am confused l don’t know what to do because I have lost everything and my education plus future has been disturbed. I tried to rescue my things but I failed because by the time I was reaching at the hostels the fire had already covered the whole building,” he said.

Zomba fire fighters came at the scene after 1 hour when the fire had burnt everything in the hostels.

The school’s headmaster and Eastern Region police spokesperson could not immediately  comment on the matter and asked for more time to gather more information.
