First Lady teams up with police welfare group in K10 million hygiene push

First Lady  Gertrude Mutharika has launched a powerful new partnership aimed at boosting sanitation and hygiene across Malawi, bringing together Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust and the Malawi Police Service Women Welfare in a bold joint initiative.

K10 million boost: First Lady launches hygiene partnership with police welfare group

Speaking at the launch, Mutharika said the two organisations shared a deep-rooted commitment to improving people’s welfare and social wellbeing, insisting the partnership would help foster healthier, cleaner and more resilient communities across the country.

Underlining her personal commitment to the cause, the First Lady generously donated K10 million alongside five sewing machines to support the initiative and help drive it forward.

Malawi Police Service Women Welfare patron, Assistant Commissioner of Police Rhoda Luhanga, welcomed the partnership, insisting it would significantly boost the association’s ongoing efforts to promote the welfare of police families, alongside sanitation, hygiene and economic empowerment more broadly.

Luhanga also took the opportunity to thank the First Lady for her continued support of the popular Umoyo wa Thanzi programme, aired on Police FM Radio, which gives women across the country a vital platform to share information and openly discuss issues affecting their daily lives.

She further revealed the new partnership would help support Executive Order Number 2 of 2026, issued by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika earlier this year, which places a firm focus on cleanliness across the nation.
