Flood victims grab government land in Mulanje

Over 20 families have grabbed government land in Mulanje following the recent floods but district authorities say officials can only authorize permanent stay at the land after talking to two concerned chiefs.

Makanga:  20 families now staying at Thuchila Farm Institute

The over 20 families from Awali village in chief Mthiramanja’s area have abandoned their homes which were hit by the floods and stayed at Thuchila Farm Institute which is in chief Juma’s area in the district.

Mulanje district commissioner Charles Makanga confirmed that the over 20 families are now staying at Thuchila Farm Institute.

“We have not given them the land. They just went to stay on the farm following the floods that hit their area. We have to bring together chiefs Mthiramanja and Juma to discuss the issue and chart the way forward,” said Makanga.

The district commissioner said the families could not leave their original chief and go to another chief without formalities.
