Fourth person dies in Balaka road accident – Police

Police in Malawi’s eastern district of Balaka say the death toll in a road accident involving Ntcheu District Council (DC) vehicle and a Min bus which happened on Saturday at Kapalamula in the district, has risen to four.

Balaka police spokesperson sub-inspector Joseph Sauka says the vehicle was coming from Chingeni road block going towards Balaka with passengers on board while the Minibus was coming from Balaka and upon reaching Kapalamula area.

He says the accident occurred when the Toyota VX driven by Mike Maleka collided head-on with the oncoming mini bus resulting in the death of three people.

“The fourth person Mr Macdonald Gremu who was a teacher at Kawale Comunity Day Secondary School and was coming from Zomba where he went to mark examinations died today (Sunday) on his way to Zomba Central Hospital where he was referred,” says Sauka.

Sauka says all the four who have died were in the Mini bus while drivers and several passengers escaped with minor injuries.

Meanwhile Police have arrested Maleka who comes from Maganga village, Traditional Authority Mlonyeni in Mchinji district but was working with Ntcheu District Council as a driver for causing death due to reckless driving and he is expected to appear before court soon.
